G-MU ousts Roxbury; UV advances, 4-1

SECTIONAL SOCCER ROUNDUP

Staff Report

Freshman Cody Hall converted a rebound off his shot late in the first half as fifth-seeded Gilbertsville-Mount Upton eliminated fourth-seeded Roxbury, 1-0, in a Section Four Class D quarterfinal Saturday.

Hall’s goal came with 6 minutes, 4 seconds to go before halftime, and the Raiders defense made it stick. Chris Delmar made 13 saves, including a penalty-kick stop on Shane Hubbard in the first half.

Craig Ross and Cody Luettger each saved goals by blocking shots at the goal line in the second half.

"I have to give Roxbury a lot of credit because they were very aggressive and were a very good team," said G-MU coach Mark Luettger, whose team earned its 11th shutout of the season.

Brandon Butts’ long goal with 11:24 left lifted third-seeded Davenport advanced past 11th-seeded Andes in a quarterfinal game.

Butts scored from about 50 yards away, giving him a team-leading 21 goals this season.

"It was unusual," Davenport coach Jennifer Henderson said of Butts’ shot. "I don’t think anybody expected him to shoot it from that far out and everybody was caught off-guard. The goalie came out and it went up and over the goalie’s head."

Henderson said her defense concentrated on Ryan Little’s long throw-ins.

"My kids had to defend every throw-in opportunity like it’s a direct or indirect kick," Henderson said. "My defense should be commended for that. Every time he threw it in, my goalie had to be ready."

Brandon Cuddy made seven saves for the Wildcats (13-3-2), who will take on Downsville in a semifinal game at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Wright National Soccer Campus. It will be a rematch of the Delaware League championship, which the Eagles won, 2-1, on Oct. 22. Downsville also beat Davenport, 2-1, in the regular season.

"They’re the only team we haven’t got past," Henderson said of the Eagles. "To get to a sectional final game, we should have to beat them."
