Hawks’ Boltus throws four TD passes in loss

Field hockey falls; women’s soccer ties

HARTWICK COLLEGE ROUNDUP

Freshman quarterback Jason Boltus threw for 439 yards and four touchdowns Saturday, but his Hartwick College football team fell, 36-26, at Norwich University (Vt.) in an Empire 8 Conference game.

The Cadets (3-5 overall, 1-3 Empire 8) jumped to a 14-0 lead en route to a 27-6 halftime advantage. Lindy Crea scored for Hartwick (4-4, 0-4) with 5 minutes, 56 seconds left in the second quarter. Crea caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Boltus to cut Norwich’s lead to 14-6, but Cory Nebel’s extra-point attempt was blocked.

Zach Turner and Tyler DeMulder (Unatego) caught TD passes of 5 and 12 yards, respectively, 42 seconds apart in the fourth quarter for Hartwick. Matt Willis capped the scoring with an 11-yard TD reception with 10:39 remaining.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Boltus finished 26-for-61 for the Hawks, who were outrushed, 254-17. Crea and Willis caught seven passes apiece and finished with 148 and 105 receiving yards, respectively. DeMulder caught six passes for 106 yards.

Hartwick plays host to Springfield College for an Empire 8 Conference game at 1 p.m. this Saturday.

Field Hockey

Oswego 1, Hartwick 0

Danielle Alberti scored off a rebound with 12:30 left in the first half to give Oswego a non-conference victory .

Hartwick (9-7), which held a 11-9 edge in shots and a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners, got seven saves from goalie Ashley King. Oswego’s Ashley Perkins made five saves for the shutout.

The Hawks, who clinched the E8 title with a victory over Utica last week, close the regular season against visiting Cortland at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Women’s Soccer

Hartwick 1, Russell Sage 1

Jen Vandenberg scored her first goal this season midway through the second half Saturday on Senior Day, helping host Hartwick (1-15-2) to a non-conference tie in its season finale.

Vandenberg settled a pass at the top of the penalty box and dribbled past two defenders for a shot to the near post that went in off the hands of Russell Sage keeper Schuyler Kokernak (five saves).

Amy Azzaro tied the score for Russell Sage (6-3-6) with a little more than four minutes left in regulation, beating Hartwick goalie Ashley Taylor (three saves).

Equestrian

Hawks Invitational

Juniors Beth Brandt and Caitlin Niedzialkowski shared the title in the open fences competition, Theresa Dillon took first in the Beginners Walk-Trot Canter, and Nicole Barron won the Walk-Trot event to lead Hartwick to a fourth-place finish at Hunter’s Rein Stable.

Skidmore won the 11-team event with 41 points, followed by SUNY-Morrisville with 39, Cornell with 38 and Hartwick with 36.

Jen Nelson placed second for Hartwick in Novice Flat, and fourth in Novice Fences to point out of the Novice category in both flat and fences. As a result, she qualifies for the Novice events at April’s regional championship meet.

Hartwick will return to competition Nov. 12 at Morrisville.
