Jaffie, Harlem lift Jackets past Spartans, 59-52, in A quarterfinal
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: SECTION FOUR CLASS A TOURNAMENT
Staff Report
Kate Jaffie scored a game-high 26 points Wednesday as the Oneonta High girls basketball team opened defense of its Section Four Class A Tournament title with a 59-52 overtime defeat of host Maine-Endwell.
The fifth-seeded Jackets (15-6) caught a break in the quarterfinal with six seconds left in regulation. No. 4 Maine-Endwell (11-8) stole an OHS inbounds pass with 12 seconds left, leading to a Katelyn Touhey layup that tied the score at 49. Touhey drew a foul on the play but missed the free throw, setting up Jaffie for a last shot.
Jaffie drove the lane but failed to get a shot off before time expired. The Spartans scored first in the overtime, converting 1 of[an error occurred while processing this directive] 2 free throws, before Sara Sason gave the Jackets the lead for good. Sason hit a layup off a pass from Madie Harlem for a 51-50 lead, and OHS went 6-for-8 at the foul line down the stretch to seal it.
"Our guards rebounded really well," OHS coach Bob Zeh said of Harlem and Bridget Farago, who grabbed 11 and 8 rebounds, respectively. "Jaffie had a good night offensively and made the shots that we needed."
Marie O’Malley contributed 12 points for the Jackets, who won the 2005 Class A sectional title, 34-32, over Elmira Southside. OHS advanced to a sectional semifinal against top-seeded Elmira Free Academy (18-1), which beat No. 8 Johnson City, 86-38, on Wednesday. Johnson City finished 1-18, with its victory a 46-35 defeat of visiting Oneonta on Jan. 21.
Michelle Phillips scored 20 points to pace the Spartans, who received 18 from Touhey.
