O-State holding youth festival series

The Oneonta State women’s soccer team and the Headwaters Soccer Club will sponsor the 16th annual Powerade Indoor Soccer and Swim Festival, which began Friday.

Youths in grades 1-6 will be coached by members of the Red Dragons women’s soccer team from 5-9 p.m. March 3, March 17 and April 14 at O-State’s Chase Physical Education Building.

Belleayre Mountain to hold ski race

Belleayre Mountan in Highmount will hold its fifth annual Denis Germain Memorial Ski Race at 11 a.m. Saturday.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Registration costs $25 and includes an all-day lift ticket, race fee and a T-shirt. Cost is $15 for those who have lift tickets or who register from 8-10 a.m. the day of the race. T-shirts will be on sale for $10.

All proceeds will support the Denis Germain Scholarship Fund, which is awarded to members of the ski club at Suffern High. Denis Germain was a firefighter who died in the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Perch derby slated for Saturday

The 10th annual Perch Derby is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Oquaga Creek State Park’s Arctic Lake.

Baseball camp this weekend at O-State

Oneonta State will hold its annual Spring Fever Baseball Camp from 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Alumni Field House. O-State baseball coach Rick Ferchen will run the camp with assistant coach Mike Lum and pitching coach Tom Marks.

AAU girls basketball tryouts start Sunday

The Catskill Mountain AAU Girls Basketball Club will hold tryouts for girls ages 12-14 from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club. Registration begins 30 minutes before the start of tryouts.

On March 5 at Unatego Central, the club will hold tryouts for girls ages 12-14 from 1-2:30 p.m. and for girls ages 15-17 from 2:30-4:30 p.m.

The club also will hold tryouts March 12 at the OBGC. Ages and times will be announced at a later date.

Girls in grades 6-12 are eligible for the travel teams, which will play in approximately six weekend tournaments from April until June and practice about once a week. A non-refundable tryout fee of $25 will cover AAU registration and expenses.

Player participation fee for 2006 is $250, which covers the cost of tournaments. This fee must be paid upon a player’s selection on the second day of tryouts, unless alternative arrangements are made with the club. Unatego faculty to play Harlem Wizards

The Unatego faculty will play the Harlem Wizards in an exhibition basketball fundraiser at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Unatego Jr.-Sr. High.

Advance tickets cost $10 for students and senior citizens and $12 for adults. Prices increase to $12 and $15, respectively, at the door.

Proceeds will be donated to the Shelton Family Fund.

Globetrotters hit SUNY Delhi on Wednesday

The Harlem Globetrotters, celebrating their 80th anniversary, will appear at Delhi Tech at 7 p.m. Wednesday during their 2006 "Unstoppable" North American Tour.

Fans can take part in a meet-and-greet session with the players following their game against the New York Nationals at the Clark Field House.

Baseball Hall to feature former All-Star Blair

Paul Blair, a two-time All-Star outfielder during his 17 major league baseball seasons, will discuss his career during a special Legends Series event at 11 a.m. March 4 at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

The event free to all Hall visitors on March 4. Tickets are not required for the program, which will take place in the Bullpen Theater. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Race car show slated for March 3-5

The third annual Southern Tier Speedworld will be presented at Johnson City’s Oakdale Mall from March 3-5. The show will feature race cars of all types, race track displays, and racing memorabilia and collectibles.

An awards party will be held at the Hillcrest American Legion on night of March 4 as well. Each show entry will receive one complimentary ticket to the awards party. Additional tickets cost $15 each and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

AAU basketball tryouts in March

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club will hold tryouts for AAU basketball teams March 5-6.

Tryouts for the Under-14 and U-15 teams run from 1-2:30 p.m. March 5 and from 6:30-7:45 p.m. March 6.

The U-17 team will work out from 2:30-4 p.m. March 5 and from 7:45-9 p.m. March 6.

Basketball tournament set for March 11

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Booster Club will hold its seventh annual 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at 8:30 a.m. March 11 at G-MU Central on Route 51 in Gilbertsville.

Cost for the double-elimination tournament is $40 per team (four-player maximum). Checks must be received by March 8. Teams can also pay in cash the day of the event.

Trophies will be awarded to each player on all first-place teams. The tournament has three levels for boys teams and three levels for girls teams (grades 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12 for each gender). If one player is in a higher grade than his or her teammates, the whole team must compete at that level.

Soccer tournament to be held in March

Teams interested in competing in the second annual Futsol Tournament, a soccer tournament sponsored by the Schenevus Soccer Club, should call Stephanie Banks at 607-638-8023.

The club will run high school tournaments for boys and girls March 25 and modified tournaments for boys and girls March 26.

OBGC sets Duke Invitational schedule

The Oneonta Boys and Girls Club will hold its eighth annual Duke Invitational Basketball Tournament from April 4-8. The event will raise money for the Boston Hospital Children’s Heart Foundation.

Boys and girls tournaments will be split into three divisions: 12-and-under, 13-15, and 16-18. Cost is $100 per team (maximum of 10 players). Rosters and fees are due by March 24.

Afton Speedway to open April 15

The New Afton Speedway will open with a practice at 1 p.m. April 15. The first day of racing starts with Icebreaker Weekend on April 21.

The points season starts April 29, with a regular show for the Big/Small Block Modifieds featuring sail panels, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and 4-Cylinder Pups.

Youth spring soccer registration opens

The Oneonta Youth Soccer Association has started registration for its Spring Recreation Soccer League.

This program is open to youths in grades K-2 who attend Oneonta City Schools or live within the Oneonta City School District.

The Hartwick College Summer Sports Camps are accepting applications for the 2006 season.

Area girl second in gymnastics event

Sophie McCarthy led the Oneonta YMCA gymnastics team with a second place finish all-around finish during a recent meet in Cortland. Sophie was first on vault and bars, fifth on beam and sixth on floor in the Level 6 Junior Division.

Emily Brackett placed sixth in the Level 6 Senior Division (second beam, fifth bars, sixth vault, seventh floor).

In the Level 4 Intermediate Division, Brittney Herrick finished 10th (second floor, ninth vault, 10th bars, 12th beam).

In the Level 4 Senior Division, Ashley Delello placed 10th (fourth bars, seventh floor, 10th vault and beam).

Local auto racing team to collect donations

Knapp Racing, a Milford-based pro stock team, will collect donations throughout the 2006 season at Utica-Rome Speedway for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York.

Calcio Legends accepting soccer registrations

Youth baseball tournament set for summer

Coast to Coast Athletics is seeking youth baseball players ages 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 to represent the United States in international competition in Puerto Rico, Australia and Hawaii next summer.

Players will compete against international all-star teams in the tournament, which is scheduled for the summer of 2006. All teams are managed by a staff of college coaches and professional scouts.
