Weir earns Rookie of Year in SUNYAC

Women’s basketball teammate Doemel makes second team

ONEONTA STATE BASKETBALL

Oneonta State’s Shannon Weir earned Rookie of the Year honors in women’s basketball from the SUNY Athletic Conference, the Red Dragons announced Thursday.

Weir (Milford) is the first freshman since the 1994-95 season to lead O-State in scoring. She follows Sheryl Ferguson, who finished as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,449 points.

Weir scored 285 points this season to lead the Red Dragons with 11 points per game. Senior Gabrielle Doemel, a Second Team All-SUNYAC selection, finished second in team scoring (8.1 ppg) and second in team rebounding (4.4). Doemel also led O-State in assists (123) and steals (53).

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Weir, the 2003 Daily Star Player of the Year in girls basketball, led all SUNYAC freshman with 12 points per game in conference play. She also grabbed a team-high 154 rebounds (5.9 per game) this winter.

Oneonta (18-8) is awaiting a possible bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. The Red Dragons fell, 68-56, to visiting Brockport in the SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals Tuesday.

Two men honored

O-State senior Sean Coffey and junior Jaysen Murphy received honorable mentions in men’s basketball from the SUNYAC.

Coffey, who transferred to Oneonta as a sophomore, led the Red Dragons with 16.2 points per game. He also had a team-best three-point shooting percentage of .425 (79-for-186). Coffey hit 173 three-pointers and averaged 10.6 points in his three seasons at O-State.

Murphy finished second in team scoring with 11.8 points per game. He also led the Red Dragons (9-16) in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and blocks (53).
