are looking up for the Unatego girls basketball team.

The Spartans really have no choice as the lowest remaining seed in the Section Four Class B Tournament.

Erika Puffer scored a game-high 26 points Saturday, helping No. 5 Unatego to a mild quarterfinal upset of fourth-seeded Chenango Valley, 52-49.

"One of our goals was to play our best basketball at end of the season," Unatego coach Greg Bonczkowski said. "I think we’re doing that. We’re peaking at the right time. It’s now or never."

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The Midstate Athletic Conference runner-up Spartans (20-3) will meet top-seeded Windsor (17-3) in a sectional semifinal Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.

Windsor beat eighth-seeded Dryden, 49-44, in overtime Saturday. No. 2 Seton Catholic Central (14-4) plays No. 3 Lansing (18-1) in Tuesday’s other semifinal.

Tuesday’s winners meet for the championship at 6 p.m. Friday at the Broome County Arena.

"If you look at similar opponents, we lost, 42-40, to Oneonta, and Windsor beat Oneonta in overtime," Bonczkowski said. "It should be a good matchup."

Puffer scored 10 points and MacKensey O’Hara had four in the opening quarter as the Spartans took a 14-10 lead. O’Hara got her second foul in the first quarter and sat the rest of the half. Despite the absence of the 6-foot-1 center, Unatego extended its lead by two points at intermission (24-18).

"Chelsie Dalton and Katrina Ritchko did a good job controlling the boards (in O’Hara’s absence)," Bonczkowski said. "They helped maintain the lead."

Unatego took a 36-27 lead into the fourth quarter before CV rallied hard with the help of a full-court press. Among the Warriors’ 22 fourth-quarter points was a three-pointer from the right wing by Katie Eaton, cutting Unatego’s advantage to 50-49 with 12 seconds left.

Puffer, the MAC’s Division I MVP, was fouled while receiving the inbounds pass and hit both free throws for the final margin. Eaton’s shot at the buzzer, from virtually the same spot as her previous three, fell short.

Freshman Colleen O’Hara contributed 15 points for Unatego.

Donnalyn Cross scored 13 for CV (11-9), which got 11 from Eaton and 10 from Alanna Cooney.

B-G 64, Newfield 61

Jennifer Patten had a hand in fifth-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford’s final six points as the Bobcats won a Section Four Class C quarterfinal at No. 4 Newfield.

Patten hit two free throws with 50 seconds left to give B-G a 59-58 lead. After Newfield’s Bridget Poole hit two free throws, Patten found Nicole Conway underneath for a 61-60 B-G lead.

Newfield’s Kim Owings then missed two free throws, and the Trojans fouled Patten with 13 seconds left. Patten made both for a 64-61 lead.

Newfield’s last possession ended with a B-G steal.

Patten scored a game-high 23 points, including a 12-for-18 effort at the foul line. She also had seven rebounds and four assists.

"They really beat her up pretty good," B-G coach Bob Conway said of Newfield’s defense on Patten. "They knew she was an offensive player, and every time she went to the rim, she paid a price."

B-G plays top-seeded Elmira Notre Dame on Wednesday at a time and site to be determined.

Mariah Schaeffer scored 14 points and Conway had for B-G, which got 11 rebounds from Marcie Day.

Edison (10-10) shot 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final quarter. Schrock was 4-for-4.

The Bulldogs (15-6), who received 23 points and 17 rebounds from Meghan Taylor, led, 12-9, after the first quarter. The Spartans then outscored Delhi, 12-9, in the second quarter.

"I thought we lost our composure at the end of the second quarter," Delhi coach Dick Alwine said. "(Edison) came out with intensity in the third quarter."

Caitlin Sullivan scored 15 points for Edison, including three of the team’s six three-pointers.

"They were way out," Alwine said of the threes. "We’d go down and score and they’d come down and hit long threes. They weren’t chintzy threes. They really shot the ball well."

The Bulldogs switched to a zone defense in the second half because of foul trouble.

"They were taking us to the basket and getting us into foul trouble," Alwine said. "They were athletic and deep. They broke us down defensively."

Lisa Ruff contributed 11 points and Caitlyn Burr had 10 rebounds for Delhi.

Downsville 52, Morris 31

Courtney Hoyt scored 15 points and Linnea Mattson had 14 for Downsville in its Section Four Class D quarterfinal victory over visiting Morris.

The Eagles (18-2) won without senior Alexa Henderson, who has left the team for reasons unrelated to basketball, coach Christine Baldauf said.

Henderson, The Daily Star’s co-Player of the Year in soccer and a First-Team Daily Star All-Star in basketball last season, confirmed Sunday she’s off the team, but did not specify why she left.

"It would have been nice to stay with my teammates but things happen, I guess," said Henderson, a point guard who helped the Eagles reach last season’s state Class D title game.

Henderson also said she has not been attending classes at Downsville but might return this week or receive tutoring at home.

Third-seeded Downsville (18-2) led, 27-18, at halftime over sixth-seeded Morris, then outscored the Mustangs, 18-8, in the third period. Mattson scored eight points in the third quarter.

Bobbi-Jean Bryden led Morris with 14 points.
