Men’s Basketball

Cocozziello top E8 rookie

Hartwick College freshman guard Jan Cocozziello earned Rookie of the Year from the Empire 8 Conference in men’s basketball, the Hawks announced Monday.

Additionally, Hartwick senior guard John Montana received Hartwick’s Sportsman of the Year from the conference.

Cocozziello led the Hawks in scoring with 14.8 points per game, averaged 3.8 rebounds, and led the team in assists (71) and steals (31).

Cocozziello earned E8 rookie of the week five times and earned an honorable mention all-conference selection for Hartwick (10-15[an error occurred while processing this directive]).

Montana, a captain, averaged 2.4 points. The E8 selects a Sportsman of the Year from each team.

Hartwick sixth

Hartwick placed sixth out of 10 teams at Cornell University on Sunday, finishing with 26 total team points.

Theresa Dillon earned a first-place finish in the beginner walk trot canter. Cailin Sanford was the top rider for Hartwick in the intermediate flat, placing second. Sanford also finished fourth in intermediate fences, and teammates Laura Clough and Swezey tied for fifth. Clough qualified for regionals in this class with her performance, and moves up a class to open fences.

Beth Brandt paced Hartwick in the open fences competition with a third-place finish.

Heather Mitchell placed second in novice flat for Hartwick, which is at Morrisville at 9 a.m. Saturday.
