Nickerson loses, 8-3, in NCAA final
Forks graduate helps Cornell to fifth-place finish

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Cornell freshman Troy Nickerson lost, 8-3, in the 125-pound championship match Saturday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Tournament.
Nickerson, a Chenango Forks graduate, is the only wrestler to win five New York state high school championships. Also a five-time Section Four champion, Nickerson’s only sectional loss came in 2000 against Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton’s Cody Conpropst, 4-2, in the 96-pound final. Nickerson was a seventh-grader at the time, and Conpropst was an eighth-grader.
On Saturday, Nickerson (36-2) fell to defending champion Joe DuBuque, a fifth-year senior at Indiana. DuBuque scored a takedown in[an error occurred while processing this directive] each period en route to the victory. Nickerson reached the finals by upsetting top-seeded Nick Simmons of Michigan State, 2-1, Friday night.
Oklahoma State won its fourth straight team championship with 122½ points. Cornell finished fifth with 62.
