NCAAD-IIIChampionships

Hartwick senior Dan Holmberg earned two more All-American honors this past weekend at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.

The Hawks finished 30th out of 53 teams with 23 points. Kenyon College (Ohio) won the meet for a record 27th straight year.

Holmberg earned honorable mention All-America after finishing 15th in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.24 seconds. He set a school record in the preliminaries, with a time of 46.01.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Holmberg also earned All-America honors in the 100 butterfly Friday, finishing seventh in 50.46. Holmberg’s first All-America honor came Thursday in the 500 free.

Senior diver Mark Phillips finished 13th in 3-meter diving (399.95) for an honorable mention. Junior Kurt Cedo finished 17th in the 200 backstroke in 1:52.98 Saturday. On Friday, Cedo placed 33rd in the 100 butterfly (52.59) and 25th in the 100 backstroke (53.18).

Hawks go 2-1 with Muhlenberg

Hartwick won two high-scoring games against Muhlenberg before losing the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Hartwick beat the Mules, 30-25, on Saturday and then won the opener of Sunday’s doubleheader, 22-21. The Hawks (2-1) lost the finale, 7-5.

Saturday’s season opener just missed setting the NCAA Division III record for combined runs in one game. The record is 61, set in 1993 (Elmhurst, Ill., beat North Park, Ill., 34-27).

The Hawks had 18 hits, including three apiece from Brad Polcare, Nick Paslow and Tyler Saladin. Polcare scored six times and Saladin had six RBIs.

Matt Walsh earned the victory for Hartwick, allowing 10 runs in three innings. The Hawks opened a 20-6 lead after four innings and led, 30-16, after the top of the sixth. Muhlenberg rallied with one in the seventh and eight in the eighth for the final score.

In Sunday’s opener, the Hawks scored eight in the top of the first and led, 15-4, after three. Mike Palanza finished with three hits, including a homer, a triple and four RBIs. Matt Mooney and Cagney Turner each contributed four hits.

Palanza had two hits, including a home run, in the second game. Mooney and Matt Kelly also contributed two hits.

Hartwick led, 5-3, going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Mules (4-7) scored four in the inning to earn the victory.

The Hawks play a doubleheader with Hamline University (Minn.) on Friday in Phoenix.

Men’s Lacrosse

Hartwick 18, St. Vincent 10

Junior Lee Austin had five goals and an assist Saturday to lead host Hartwick to its first victory this season.

Hartwick (1-4)scored seven goals in the second period and four in the third to erase a 6-2 deficit.

Pat McCormack contributed three goals and three assists for Hartwick, which got three goals and an assist from Mike Debrossy and Blaine Meyer.

The Hawks (1-4) travel to Empire 8 opponent Alfred this Saturday.
