Wood throws no-hitter for Red Dragons

ONEONTA STATE ROUNDUP

Junior Kathleen Wood pitched a no-hitter in the opener and senior Kim Prior threw a two-hitter in the second game as host Oneonta State swept a softball doubleheader with Russell Sage on Wednesday.

The Red Dragons won the first game, 4-0, and won the second, 8-0, in five innings.

Wood’s no-hitter was Oneonta State’s first since Amy Herba and Kacie Cunningham combined to no-hit Potsdam on April 16, 2004.

Wood (3-3) had nine strikeouts.

Oneonta State (7-7) scored four runs in the sixth inning in the first game. Sophomore Shannon Egan’s two-run single snapped a scoreless tie. Meghan Martin also had a two-run single in the inning.

Katie Eyring finished 3-for-3, with two RBIs, for the Red Dragons. Yvonne Ferrara, Egan and Michelle Norwich each had two hits.

Chris Salamida pitched eight innings to earn his third victory this season as O-State held off Utica in a non-conference game at home.

Utica had the tying run at third base, but senior Greg Funck (Roxbury) struck out Utica’s Mike Stevens to end the game. Funck earned his fourth save.

Dave Paquette led O-State with two hits and two RBIs. Chris Brew was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Salamida (3-1) allowed one run on five hits. He also had eight strikeouts.

Hamilton 10, O-State 5

Frasher Kempe and Jack Newton scored three goals apiece to lead Hamilton to a non-league victory on the road.

The Continentals (5-0) led, 5-4, entering the fourth period before outscoring the Red Dragons, 5-1, to pull away.

Chris Hatzakorzian, Pete Glass, Tim Burns, Tyler Dunne and George Tsirigotis each scored for O-State (5-3), which led, 4-1, after the first period.
