Bronco Weekday Classic

Oneonta High graduate Will Anger earned two of host SUNY Delhi’s 14 NJCAA Division III qualifying marks Tuesday with victories in the shot put and hammer throw during the fourth annual Bronco Weekday Track Classic.

Anger won the shot put with a distance of 42 feet, 4 inches, then cruised to a triumph in the hammer throw at 134-6. Anger, who reached the hammer-throw mark on his third attempt, beat runner-up and teammate Joe Vaillancourt by 34-8 in the event.

The Broncos also received first-place finishes from Alban Kalaj (400 hurdles), Matt Conant (mile; 3,000), Adam Wilson (110 hurdles), Matt Jordan (800), Keith Romero (high jump), Pat Branning (triple jump) and their sprint medley relay team.

Three Delhi women qualified for the NJCAAs, and the Broncos received victories from Danielle Kelley (200), Stacie Ann Palmer (800), their 800 relay and their sprint medley relay. Delhi competes at the Albany State Invitational on Saturday.

The NJCAA Division III championships are slated for May 11-13 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.

Baseball

Schenectady 5-5, Cobleskill 2-6

Ryan Rockefeller helped host Cobleskill avoid a sweep with a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh, clinching a Fighting Tigers’ victory in the second game of a Mountain Valley Conference doubleheader.

Pinch-runner Mikael Wilson and Ron Smalling executed a successful double steal to set up Rockefeller, who drove in both runners with a one-out double. Rockefeller finished 2-for-3 for Cobleskill, which held a 4-1 lead before allowing four runs to Schenectady in the top of the seventh.

Winning pitcher Matt Young went the distance, striking out one and walking three in an eight-hitter. Young also homered for Cobleskill, which committed five errors.

Schenectady (15-8, 8-1) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the opener and limited the Fighting Tigers (10-12, 7-1) to four hits. Smalling went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Cobleskill, which got five strikeouts, a walk and a hit batsman in six innings from starting pitcher Mike Disarno.

Men’s Tennis

Cobleskill 7, Mohawk Valley 2

Steve Weis earned a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory at first singles to lead Cobleskill to a Mountain Valley Conference victory at home. The Fighting Tigers improved to 3-0 against conference opponents, tying Herkimer Community College for first place in the MVC. Cobleskill also clinched its first NJCAA Region III Tournament berth and its first winning season since 2000.

Adam Olinski and Bill Forshaw rallied from first-set losses to win their respective singles matches, helping visiting Delhi to its first victory of the 2006 season.

Olinski won at second singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Forshaw won his fourth-singles match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Delhi (1-3) won four of six singles matches en route to the victory.

The Broncos host Mohawk Valley on Thursday.
