Late rally lifts Afton past B-G; Unatego wins

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Staff Report

Jacob Snyder keyed a sixth-inning rally with an RBI single Thursday as visiting Afton beat Bainbridge-Guilford, 5-4, in a Midstate Athletic Conference Division II baseball game.

Afton started its comeback from a 4-3 deficit when losing pitcher Terry Cordner hit Lupo Mack to open the sixth. Cordner then allowed a single to Phil Sanford and back-to-back walks to Karl Rogler and Trevor Beames, the latter scoring Mack as the tying run.

B-G (1-4, 0-1) then turned a 1-2-3 double play, leaving runners at second and third with two out. Snyder followed with a sharp single to right field, driving in Sanford as the decisive run.

"Rogler came in and put us down in order," B-Gcoach Steve Rice said.

Joe Bunzey paced Afton in its division opener with two hits, a run and an RBI. Sanford also had two of the Crimson Knights’ six hits.

B-G’s Jon Walker finished 2-for-4, including a leadoff home run in the third inning. Matt Steinbach doubled for the Bobcats, who finished with four hits.

B-G is at Sidney today for a cross-division game between MAC teams.
