Baseball doubleheader vs. Cortland huge for O-State

ONEONTA STATE WEEKEND PREVIEW

Staff Report

Oneonta State baseball highlights a busy weekend for the Red Dragons’ athletics programs.

All of O-State’s spring teams will compete this weekend, which includes a huge baseball doubleheader against visiting Cortland State. Both teams enter the games, which begin at noon Saturday at Red Dragon Field, with 9-1 records in the SUNY Athletic Conference.

Both teams are battling for the regular-season SUNYAC title, which would mean home-field advantage throughout the SUNYAC Tournament. O-State closes its SUNYAC schedule against visiting Oswego on Sunday, when Cortland plays its last conference games at New Paltz.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The only SUNYAC team to beat Cortland (26-5) this season is Oswego, which won the second game of an April 2 home doubleheader, 3-2. O-State (22-7) lost its only SUNYAC game this spring, 6-2, to visiting Plattsburgh this past Saturday.

Should poor weather postpone Saturday’s doubleheader, it will move to a noon start Monday.

Sophomore Nick Martino leads Oneonta with a .432 batting average. Senior Mike Kuratnick is batting .342 with 19 RBIs, which is tied for the team lead with classmate Chris Brew.

Men’s Lacrosse

Oneonta (8-4, 2-1) is home for a noon SUNYAC game Saturday against Oswego. Freshman Matt Harvey and junior Pete Glass lead the Red Dragons with 16 goals apiece. Junior goalie Brian Tricoles has a .600 save percentage on 111 saves, which rank seconds and third in the SUNYAC, respectively.

Women’s Lacrosse

O-State (5-7, 3-1) visits Oswego for a 1 p.m. SUNYAC game Saturday. Senior Jessica Garabedian has team-bests of 42 goals and 43 groundballs. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna VanEtten has 112 saves.

Softball

Oneonta (13-15, 4-8) hosts Oswego today and Cortland on Saturday in back-to-back SUNYAC doubleheaders. Should Saturday’s games be postponed, they will move to a 1 p.m. start Sunday.

Junior Allison Bandos leads the Red Dragons with a .344 batting average. Senior captain Michelle Norwich is batting .307 with 14 RBIs.

Men’s Tennis

Oneonta (9-3) plays a make-up non-league match against Scranton at noon Sunday. The Red Dragons beat Hartwick, 7-0, on Thursday for their sixth straight victory.

Track

Oneonta hosts the Oneonta State Invitational at 3 p.m. Saturday in the first of two home meets this season for the Red Dragons. O-State also has a home meet scheduled for May 6.
