Albany Spring Classic

Oneonta High graduate Will Anger finished three events in the top five Saturday to lead the SUNY Delhi men’s track team at the University of Albany Spring Classic.

Anger placed third in the discus (130 feet, 4 inches) and hammer throw (130-9), and fifth in the shot put (41-4 1/4) for Delhi, which placed second with 76 points.

Albany won the event, which featured several club teams, with 352½ points.

"The weather was unbelievable," Delhi coach Bob Backus said. "The track was flooded. ... Every event was like ru[an error occurred while processing this directive]nning the steeplechase."

Delhi’s 400 relay team finished third in 45.59 seconds to earn one of four NJCAA Division III qualifying times for the Broncos.

Adam Wilson had the top Delhi men’s finish, placing second in the 400 hurdles (56.01). Charlie Morris (Gilbertsville-Mount Upton) placed third in the javelin (138-5).

Krystal Baird paced Delhi’s women with a second-place finish in the 200 in an NJCAA D-III qualifying time of 27.69. Stacie Ann Palmer also hit a qualifying time, placing seventh in the 400 (1:02.05).

Delhi’s 400 relay rounded out the Broncos’ NJCAA qualifiers, finishing fourth in 52.14.

Nichole Ezell placed second in the discus (79-7) and Danielle Kelley was second in the high jump (4-9) for the Broncos, who finished second with 36 team points. Albany won the meet with 289 points.

The Broncos are at Ithaca on Tuesday.

Men’s Tennis

Cobleskill 5, Broome 4

Adam Steiner won at second singles to lead host Cobleskill to a non-conference victory Saturday. Steiner beat Dan Sherma, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), helping the Fighting Tigers (6-3) to a victory over the defending Region III champion Hornets for the first time since 1998.

Steiner also earned athlete of the week honors Sunday from Cobleskill.

Derek Norberg, Perry Gould and Mike Hooker also won singles matches for Cobleskill, which has qualified for the Region III Tournament for the first time since 1998.
