Hawks water polo wins division title
Sumich scores five goals in defeat of Harvard

Sophomore Kim Sumich scored five goals Sunday to lead Hartwick to its sixth straight Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division championship as the Hawks beat host Harvard, 10-4, in the final.
The Hawks (24-9), ranked 12th in the country, have won the CWPA Northern Division crown every season since the inception of the Division I water polo program six years ago. Hartwick is 50-0 against Northern Division teams during that span.
Junior Keri James contributed two goals and an assist for the Hawks, who beat Harvard for the fourth time this season and for the second time over the weekend.
Hartwick sophomore Bronwen Knox, who leads the nation with 103 goals, was scoreless in Sunday’s final. Junior Olivia Co[an error occurred while processing this directive]lebourne made nine saves for the Hawks.
Hartwick advanced to the final with a 17-2 victory over Connecticut College. Sumich had three goals and Knox finished with two goals and two assists. Elizabeth Alonzo made six saves over the final three quarters for Hartwick.
The Hawks opened the tournament with victories over Utica and Harvard on Saturday.
Knox and Teresa Fleming had three goals apiece against Utica. Eleven players scored for the Hawks, who also got two goals and two assists from Stefani Toungate.
Hartwick then beat Harvard, 12-2, after jumping to a 9-1 lead in the first half. Sophomore Ellen Sevigny scored a season-high five goals and Knox had three for the Hawks, who received 14 saves from Colebourne.
The Hawks will compete in the CWPA Eastern Championships at Brown University this weekend. Seedings will be released at noon today. This weekend’s winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

Men’s Lacrosse
RIT 22, Hartwick 5
Eric Pritchard scored seven goals and Dave Thering had five goals and three assists to lead RIT to an Empire 8 Conference victory at home Saturday.
RIT, which is ranked seventh in the nation, broke a 3-3 tie with a 9-1 run. The Tigers had a 61-14 advantage in shots.
Pat McCormack scored twice to lead Hartwick, which finished its season 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the Empire 8.
Women’s Lacrosse
Hartwick loses twice Kim Medla scored with 1 minute, 17 seconds left in the second overtime to lead host Ithaca to a 9-8 Empire 8 victory Sunday.
Hartwick also fell, 12-5, to Elmira on Saturday.
Against Ithaca, the Hawks (7-7, 1-4) erased a 4-1 deficit with a 6-0 run capped by Tiffany Hoke’s third goal with 11:39 left in regulation.
The Bombers (2-9, 2-4) scored the last three goals of regulation to force overtime. Asti Kutzer scored in the first overtime to put Ithaca up, 8-7, before Jenev Schilling tied it with 2:13 left in the second of two mandatory overtime periods. Amanda Gerich made 19 saves for the Hawks (7-7, 1-4).
On Saturday, Kelsey Campbell and Jessica DeBrita had two goals apiece in Hartwick’s loss. Hartwick cut its deficit to 7-5 on goals from Jamie Boulton and Campbell, but Elmira closed with a 5-0 run. Hartwick hosts Utica at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Tennis
Empire 8 Championships
Junior Vanja Ljubibratic won his four matches in singles and doubles, but Hartwick lost two matches at the Empire 8 Championships in Rochester.
The Hawks finished sixth after losing to RIT, 4-1, in the first round and, 5-2, to Alfred University in the fifth-place match.
Hartwick (2-11) plays at Elmira on Wednesday.
