Schifano’s RBI single lifts Cooperstown over Waterville

Merritt Schifano’s RBI single with two out in the bottom of the eighth gave Cooperstown softball an 8-7 victory over visiting Waterville on Tuesday.
Lisa Covert started a two-out rally in the Center State Conference Division II opener for the Redskins with an infield single, then stole second. Schifano followed with the winning single to right-center field.
Schifano finished 4-for-5 with five RBIs for Cooperstown (4-2 overall, 1-0 CSC D-II), which had 14 hits.
"The one time she didn’t get a hit was an error, and she basically knocked the shortstop over backwards," Cooperstown coach Dave Bliss said. "She was just ripping the ball tonight."
Ariel Smith struck out six and walked none in an 11-hitter for Cooperstown, which got three hits and two RBIs from Kyle Mc[an error occurred while processing this directive]Gillivery.
Covert finished with two hits and two stolen bases for the Redskins, who are at Mount Markham today.

Margaretville 11, Downsville 6 Jennifer McMurray struck out 14 and walked two in a four-hitter as visiting Margaretville won a Delaware League game.
The Blue Devils rallied from a 6-4 deficit with a six-run sixth, sparked by a three-run triple from Stephanie Williamson. She scored the fourth run of the inning when the throw to third from left field skipped into dead-ball territory.
Jodi Mathis and Natalie Shaffer each went 2-for-3 for Margaretville (3-2, 2-2).
Downsville (5-3, 1-2) is at Windham today.

Carrianne Fairbairn went 2-for-3 for Andes. Losing pitcher Amie Ballo struck out 12 and walked two. The Mountaineers (1-4, 1-3) host Franklin on Thursday.

Winning pitcher Courtney Brower struck out 18 and walked five to lead visiting Hunter-Tannersville to a Delaware League victory.
Brower also finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Rachel Messina and Maggie Brabazon had two hits apiece for Windham (1-5, 1-2), which hosts Downsville today.

Gilboa 13, Stamford 7 Jenna Danouski finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs to lead Gilboa to a Delaware League home victory. Chelsea Martin doubled for the Wildcats (1-3, 1-2).
"Their pitcher had some control problems and we came out swinging the bats in the first inning," Gilboa coach Dan McGlynn said of the Wildcats’ nine-run first inning.
Gilboa hosts South Kortright on Thursday.

Julie Pornbeck struck out six in a three-hitter as visiting Greene won in the Midstate Athletic Conference to snap Unatego’s four-game winning streak.
Andrea Myers hit an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead. Spartans center fielder Sharlynn Plows threw out a second Greene runner trying to score on Myers’ single.
Clara Barnhart had an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh but was thrown out at second trying to stretch it into a double. After Barnhart made the second out, Pornbeck ended the game by inducing a groundout.
Unatego (4-3, 1-1) plays at Unadilla Valley on Thursday.

Jessie Winans had a three-run double to key a six-run second inning. Winning pitcher Morgan Muller had six strikeouts and five walks for the Crimson Knights (4-1, 2-0), who visit Walton on Thursday and Hancock on Friday.

Winning pitcher Dani Koltz homered in the first inning, and the visiting Warriors benefited from five Oneonta errors for a Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory.
"With a little bit better defense, we probably would have lost, 5-1, instead of 11-1," OHS coach George Moussa said.
The Yellowjackets (1-7, 1-6) pulled within 3-1 in the fourth inning. Hanna Kirkpatrick hit a leadoff single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Mari Allison. Ashley Dunn followed with an RBI single.
OHS is at Susquehanna Valley today.
