Laurens Youth League to meet Saturday

The Laurens Youth League will hold an organizational practice for its Little League and Minor League teams at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Laurens Rec Center.

Worcester alumni basketball games set

The Worcester Varsity Club will sponsor the 16th annual Alumni Basketball Games starting at 6 p.m. Saturday.

More than 55 alumni who have played for Worcester during the last five decades will compete at the Bernard F. Cerra Gymnasium. Th[an error occurred while processing this directive]e event starts with a "Rookies" game (2000-2005), followed by the "Superstars" (1985-99) at 7 p.m. and the "Legends" (up to 1984) at 8 p.m. A "Future Stars" game for youths in grades 4-6 will be featured at halftime of each alumni game.

Admission is $2 for adults and $ 1 for students. The Worcester Music Department will sponsor a Brooks’ BBQ Dinner at 4 p.m. Saturday as well.

Alumni who have not been contacted but still wish to play should call Worcester athletic director Jim Kenyon.

Area baseball tournament starts Saturday

The Toronto Blue Jays baseball organization will host its sixth annual high school exhibition series Saturday and Sunday.

North Rockland and Francis Lewis will play at 5 p.m. Saturday at Stamford’s Archibald Field, followed by Lynbrook and North Rockland at 7:30 p.m. At 11 a.m. Sunday, Francis Lewis will play Lynbrook at Wilbur Park in Milford.

The games are free to the public.

Handgun shooting class set for Saturday

The Oneonta Sportsman Club at 251 Rod and Gun Club Road will sponsor Women On Target, an introduction to handgun shooting, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

The class will deal with basic firearms safety and consist of about four hours of lecture and two-to-three hours of shooting various handguns on the range.

Colonial Ridge GC to hold meetings Monday

The Monday Morning Ladies golf league at Colonial Ridge Golf Course in Laurens will meet at 8:30 a.m. Monday, with play to follow. The Monday Night Ladies League starts at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Oneonta CC to offer free golf lessons

The Oneonta Country Club will offer free 10-minute golf lessons throughout May in conjunction with Play Golf America’s PGA Free Lesson Month.

Oneonta’s new pro, PGA Professional Jeremy Kerr, will conduct the lessons, which are designed to help players of all skill levels. To set up an appointment with Kerr, call the OCC at 607-432-9074.

DEC announces changes in flounder fishing

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced Thursday changes in 2006 recreational fishing regulations for summer flounder (fluke), scup (porgy) and monkfish.

The new emergency regulations, which are effective immediately, are as follows:

Fluke: Open season May 6-Sept. 12; minimum length 18 inches; possession limit 4.

Porgy: Open season June 1-Oct. 31.

Monkfish: Minimum length 17 inches; tail length 11 inches.

All changes supersede 2005 regulations.

The emergency rule will expire July 24, 2006. The DEC is proposing to adopt the emergency rule as a permanent rule. Baseball Hall to celebrate women in baseball

In honor of Mother’s Day, the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will celebrate women in baseball May 14-15.

The first 200 mothers to enter the Hall will receive a complimentary carnation. The two-day event will offer visitors a chance to celebrate women in baseball with former All-American Girls such as Isabel "Lefty" Alvarez, Shirley Burkovich, Jean Coine, Gloria Elliot, Jane Moffet and Dolly White.

All Mother’s Day programs at the Hall of Fame are free with Hall admission, but seating is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

A meet-and-greet session with special guests from the Women in Baseball celebration will run from 10-11:30 a.m. May 15 in Cooper Park. At noon, the fourth annual Cooperstown Game Day Parade starts on Main Street in Cooperstown. The parade will include members of the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates, who will compete in the 60th annual Hall of Fame Game at 2 p.m. May 15 at Doubleday Field. The annual Home Run Derby will precede the game at 1 p.m.

Pro Wrestling Hall induction set for May 20

The Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame will hold its 2006 induction ceremony at 6 p.m. May 20 at St. Mary’s Auditorium in Amsterdam.

Tickets cost $50 for the event, which will be hosted by 2003 Hall of Famer Nick Bockwinkel. Bobby "the Brain" Heenan and Ray "the Crippler" Stevens will be inducted this year.

The Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame annual convention will run from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 20 at the Best Western in Amsterdam. A meet-and-greet session runs from 3-4 p.m. and includes appearances by Killer Kowalski, Dominic Denucci, George "The Animal" Steele, The Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young, among others. Cost to enter the session is $10.

At 8 p.m. May 19, World of Hurt Wrestling will present Northeast Championship Pro wrestling at Amsterdam High. Admission is $12. Tickets are available at the door or by calling Hillbilly Cousin Luke at 1-908-672-2369.

Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Demolition Ax, Doink the Clown, Matt Hyson (Spike Dudley) and The Missing Link are among the featured wrestlers.

Riverside 5K scheduled for May 20

The third annual Riverside 5K Run-for-Fun starts at 9 a.m. May 20. Entry forms are available at Riverside Elementary School.

’Wick soccer assistant offering goalie lessons

Hartwick men’s soccer assistant coach Randall Moate is offering lessons for youth goalkeepers.

Cost is $30 an hour for individual training or $25 an hour per person for training in pairs. The lessons are for keepers ages 11 and older.

Del Anthony basketball to start in June

The eighth annual Del Anthony Basketball Classic starts at 6 p.m. June 12 at Neahwa Park in Oneonta.

Games will run Tuesday and Thursday nights for the 5-on-5 men’s basketball league, which has a roster maximum of 10 players per team.
