O-State baseball wins ECAC semi, 1-0

Women’s track program earns third consecutive ECAC crown

ONEONTA STATE ROUNDUP

Mike Kuratnick’s infield single Friday drove in the decisive run as the Oneonta State baseball team defeated visiting New Paltz, 1-0, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Upstate New York Tournament semifinal.

Freshman Ryan Myers led off the last of the seventh with a single to center field. Brandon Galutz then sacrificed pinch-runner Josh Bedosky to second with a bunt.

Pinch-hitter Nick Martino, inserted to face reliever Ryan Schafer, moved Bedosky to third with a groundout to second. Senior Kuratnick followed with a hard shot to shortstop and beat a throw in the dirt to first, allowing Bedosky to score.

O-State junior Chris Salamida went the distance in the nine-inning semifinal, striking out seven in a two-hitter for his second st[an error occurred while processing this directive]raight 1-0 triumph. Salamida threw a three-hit shutout against Plattsburgh two weeks ago in the opening game of the SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament.

Salamida finished the season 8-2 with 75 strikeouts in 11 starts for Oneonta, which advanced to the ECAC Upstate New York championship game.

O-State (31-10) will host Rochester Institute of Technology at 2 p.m. today in the final. RIT defeated visiting St. John Fisher, 7-0, in Friday’s other semifinal.

Starter Jeff Stith, who struck out three, allowed three hits and one run for New Paltz (20-21) before Schafer took over.

Friday’s semifinal was delayed by two hours because of rain.

Oneonta last won an ECAC title outright in 1975, the second of two straight. The Red Dragons also earned ECAC co-championships in 2003 and 2004.

O-State women win ECACs

Senior Musu Jackson-Buckner and junior Kaitlin O’Sullivan won individual titles Friday, leading Oneonta State’s women to the Eastern College Athletic Conference team championship at Springfield College.

O-State won its third straight ECAC women’s track championship. The Red Dragons won the ECAC indoor crown this past winter, after winning the ECAC outdoor title last spring.

Jackson-Buckner won the 200 and finished second in the 100. O’Sullivan won the 1,500 and placed third in the 800.

Graduate student Ashlee Robertson finished second in the 400, and junior Maureen Verdier placed third in the 400 hurdles for the Red Dragons, who scored 67 points and beat runner-up Lincoln University by 13½ points.

Jackson-Buckner and O’Sullivan have automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III championships next week. Jackson-Buckner earned automatic bids in the 100 and 200, and O’Sullivan is an automatic qualifier in the 1,500. The Red Dragons 400 relay team has also automatically qualified for the NCAA finals, which start Thursday at Benedictine University (Ill.).

O-State’s men placed 22nd out of 54 teams Friday.
