Schenevus shocks T-V champs, 4-3

Morris upends H-T; Laurens tops Wildcats

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: SECTIONALS

Staff Report

Adam Finger struck out 15 in a two-hitter Thursday as 12th-seeded Schenevus upset fifth-seeded host Cherry Valley-Springfield, 4-3, in eight innings during a Section Four Class D Tournament baseball opener.

The Dragons’ Corey Hubbard provided the winning run in the eighth. He led off with a walk, stole second and third, and scored when CV-S catcher Mathias Vanderwerker’s throw to third went into left field.

Schenevus’ victory was one of two big upsets in Class D on Thursday. No. 13 Morris defeated fourth-seeded Hunter-Tannersville, 5-4.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]The Dragons will host Morris at 1 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal.

Left-hander Finger (4-4) struck out eight of the first nine batters.

"He was really overpowering with the fastball," Schenevus coach Dane Carpenter said. "We worked on his curveball this morning and he mixed that in that in, too."

Carpenter said Finger took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but CV-S — which won its first Tri-Valley League title Monday with a 9-7 victory over Edmeston — rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two out.

Steve Herringshaw hit a double to center to break up the no-hitter before Spencer Staley was hit by a pitch.

The Patriots (13-4) then executed a double steal to move the runners to second and third. Freshman pinch-hitter David Adams followed with a line-drive single to right that scored both runners to tie the score at 3.

The Dragons (7-9) scored three runs in the first inning off Ben Halay.

Shawn Sperbeck led off with an infield single to third. Mike Gergich walked and Finger hit an RBI single to right. Hubbard then squeeze-bunted toward third to score Gergich as the second run.

Back-to-back walks to Jim Trask and Jesse Ward plated the third run.

CV-S then brought in Hyde Clarke, who struck out 17. Clarke pitched the first five innings for the Patriots in the T-V championship game Monday.

CV-S coach Ed Dubben said Halay and Clarke combined on a no-hitter, but Schenevus’ scorebook showed the Dragons with four hits.
