Owego capitalized on its biggest opportunity Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Indians took advantage of an error and scored four runs in the seventh inning en route to a 5-1 baseball victory over host Oneonta High in a Section Four Class A Tournament quarterfinal.
With the score tied at 1, Oneonta pitcher Don Potter got the first two outs of the inning. Jon Reynolds then grounded to first. OHS first baseman Dan Wood fielded the ball, but his throw to Potter at first went wide.
Matt Markosky then singled and Marc Baker walked to load the bases. Mike Suwak followed with a triple to give Owego (9-11) the le[an error occurred while processing this directive]ad. Suwak also scored to give the Indians a 5-1 lead.
"We had many, many opportunities and it was 1-1 going into the seventh," said OHS coach Joe Hughes, whose fourth-seeded Yellowjackets finished 15-6. "They really took advantage of their opportunity.
"We came up empty today," he continued. "We had a great turnaround from last season and I’m proud of them. We just didn’t play a good game today."
Oneonta, which finished 5-11 last season, missed chances to score throughout the first six innings. The Jackets stranded two runners in the first, two in the second and a runner at second in the third. Additionally, OHS loaded the bases with none out in the sixth but scored one run.
In their six losses this season, the Jackets have been shut out three times and scored a combined eight runs.
"Any time you lose a game, you’re disappointed because you play to compete and win," Hughes said. "In this case, it happens to be the last game of the year. We were a good team and, unfortunately, we had a tough day today."

SECTION FOUR CLASS C
Walton 2, Newfield 1
Freshman and No. 9 hitter Michael Mora hit the winning single in the bottom of the seventh as Walton won a Section Four Class C opener at home.
"My wife was concerned about my health because I jumped so high down the third-base line," Walton coach Gary Backus said of his reaction to his team’s 14th consecutive victory. "She thought I was going to pull something in my back."
Sophomore Casey Killian opened Walton’s seventh with a double down the left-field line. Pinch-runner Cody MacDonald advanced to third when Patrick O’Brien reached on an infield fielding error, setting up Mora for an RBI single that caromed off third base and into left field.
Winning pitcher Andy Jackson (5-2) scattered seven hits, struck out six and walked two.
Jackson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and helped himself out of another one in the seventh. Newfield (7-12), the No. 12 seed, had runners on second and third with two out in the seventh when T.J. Poyer hit a swinging bunt to the left side of the infield. Jackson fielded it and narrowly threw out Poyer at first to end the inning.
The fifth-seeded Warriors (14-2-1), winners of the Midstate Athletic Conference championship, opened the scoring in the first inning. Nate Shelton led off with a single and went to third on Sean Fisher’s single. Jackson then hit a deep drive to center.
"The kid made a Willie Mays catch over the shoulders," Backus of Trojans center fielder Zak Stamp.
Shelton tagged from third and scored.
Walton plays fourth-seeded Elmira Notre Dame, a 22-1 winner over Odessa-Montour, in a quarterfinal at 1 p.m. Saturday. Backus said he thought the game would be played in the Binghamton area.
