Sidney’s Guerriere has big day
CV-S boys win Class D title; Cooperstown girls finish third

Sidney senior Katelyn Guerriere had season-best performances in three events and helped the Warriors’ 400-meter relay team to its best time of the season Thursday in the Section Four Class C meet at Windsor.
Guerriere, a three-time outdoor state track champion, also had personal-best performances in the 400 hurdles and the triple jump.
Guerriere experienced a rarity Thursday a second-place finish. She ran a personal-best 1 minute, 5.1 seconds in the 400 hurdles, but was nipped at the line by Lansing’s Caitlin Wright, who crossed in 1:04.9.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]In the triple jump, Guerriere covered 38 feet, 3½ inches, breaking her school record by 2½ inches. In placing second in the state meet last season, Guerriere jumped 38-1.
She also won the 100 hurdles in a season-best 14.5 seconds. A two-time state champion in the event, Guerriere’s best time is 14.4.
Sidney’s 400 relay team of Amber Heath, Ashley Mahlmeister, Christie Meno and Guerriere crossed first in 52.0.
Lansing won the girls title with 93 points. Sidney was the top local team, placing fifth with 48 points.
Lansing also won the boys title with 81 points. Unatego placed fourth with 50 points followed by Delhi with 46.
The Spartans’ Matt Newman won the long jump (20-11 3/4) and the triple jump (41-2 3/4), and placed third in the high jump (6-0).
Unatego’s Austin Henchey won the 100 in 11.1.
Sidney’s Mike Hinsch won the 400 hurdles in a season-best 57.8.

Section Four Class D
Brian Sutton won the 400 and ran legs on two winning relays to help Cherry Valley-Springfield to victory in the Section Four Class D meet Thursday at SUNY Delhi.
CV-S had 104 points, nine better than runner-up Milford.
Sutton’s time in the 400 of 52.5 seconds was .8 ahead of runner-up Kyle Hogan of Milford.
Sutton anchored the Patriots’ winning 1,600 relay, which crossed in 3:39.0. He ran the second leg on CV-S’ 3,200 relay, which finished first in 8:50.7. Jason Guernsey and Weston Johnson also ran in both winning relays.
Milford’s Dan Baxter won the 110 hurdles (17.0) and the 400 hurdles (1:01.1).
Edmeston’s Claude Davis was also a double-winner. He won the shot put (44-4½) and the discus (135-2).
On the girls side, Odessa-Montour won with 159½ points. CV-S was second with 106.
The Patriots’ Ashley Van Brink won the shot put (31-4) and the discus (95-4).
Kelly McCarthy of Gilbertsville-Mount Upton finished first in the 400 (1:01.3) and won the 800 (2:38.1).
Downsville’s Stephanie Shellman won the 1,500 (5:16.5) and the 3,000 (11:36.1).

Section Three Class C-1
Cooperstown’s girls finished third in the Section Three Class C-1 meet Thursday at Little Falls.
The host school won with 152 points, five better than runner-up Tully.
The Redskins’ best performance came in the 1,600 relay, an event they won in a season-best time of 4:21.9 to beat Tully by .8 seconds.
Anchor Marissa Kaplan passed a Tully runner on the final straightaway to give Cooperstown the victory. The Redskins’ previous best time this season was 4:25.
Becky Fisher, Dana Leonard and Chelsea Conger were also on the team. Kaplan had the fastest split, running a 1:01.
Kaplan also placed second in the 100 (13.1) and the 200 (27.0). She ran a personal-best 12.8 in the 100 semifinals.
Becky Fisher had second-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (16.2) and 400 hurdles (1:09.0), the latter a personal best.
Cooperstown athletes who finished in the top three will compete in the Section Three State Qualifier, which starts at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Rome Free Academy.
The Redskins’ boys will compete in the Section Three Class C-1 meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Morrisville-Eaton.
