Staff Report
Philip Pohl singled home Frank Petroskey in the first inning Tuesday, but Cooperstown failed to score again in an 8-1 Section Three Class C semifinal baseball loss at Watertown-IHC.
Third-seeded Watertown (19-6) tied the score in the bottom of the first, then took control with a four-run second.
"We did not handle the heat as well as they did," said Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek, who added the temperature hovered around 88 degrees Tuesday in Watertown. "It was extremely hot and I started to become concerned about dehydration. It didn’t seem to bother them, though."
Petroskey finished 3-for-3 for the seventh-seeded Redskins, who had five hits against winning pitcher Steve Magourney. Co[an error occurred while processing this directive]operstown starting pitcher Luke Banner allowed five runs in four innings and fell to 7-2.
Cooperstown, which went 5-10 in 2005, ended its season 16-6. The Redskins opened sectionals Thursday with a 4-0 defeat of No. 10 seed Beaver River, then upset No. 2 Bishop Grimes, 11-10, in a quarterfinal Saturday.
"All good things come to an end," Miosek said.
