Cooperstown Legion falls short; Oneonta wins

Peter Green hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to pull Cooperstown within a run, but St. Johnsville hung on for a 7-6 Legion baseball victory Friday at Doubleday Field.

Green’s homer to right-center made it 7-6 with none out. Ben Halay was hit by a pitch before Mathias VanDerwerker hit into a double play and Colin Weeks struck out to end it. Scott Dubben went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs for Cooperstown (2-3), which plays at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ilion.

Oneonta 4, Binghamton 1

Don Potter struck out a Legion-best 12 and walked two in a five-hitter Wednesday night, leading Oneonta Post 259 to a 4-1 baseball victory over host Binghamton 1645.

Ryan Pondolfino walked to open the third inning and took second on a wild pitch. Devlin Vanderhoof followed with a RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Mike Seroka then reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second, setting up Lane Potter for a two-out, run-scoring single.
