Staff Report
Schenectady native Casper Wells hit a three-run homer with two out in the top of the first inning Tuesday, leading the Oneonta Tigers to an 8-3 New York-Penn League baseball victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Vermont.
Wells’ homer to left capped a six-run first inning for Stedler Division leader Oneonta, which improved to 6-1 after completing the sweep with a 5-0 victory in the second game.
Rain washed out Monday’s opener of Oneonta’s three-game series at Vermont (2-6), resulting in two seven-inning games Tuesday. The teams meet again at 7:05 tonight.
Right fielder Wells finished 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs in the opener.

After leadoff Scott Sizemore grounded out, shortstop Michael Martinez allowed Joseph Tucker to reach base on a throwing error. Brennan Boesch then flew out to right before Santo De Leon struck out swinging. De Leon reached base, however, as Vermont starter Jack Spradlin threw a wild pitch on the third strike. De Leon took second and Tucker reached third on the play.
Ronnie Bourquin walked to load the bases, setting up Brandon Timm for a two-run single to left. Jordan Newton also singled to left to drive in Bourquin from second before Wells hit his professional home run.
Oneonta starter Chris Cody, whose parents graduated from Davenport, earned his first professional victory. Cody (1-0, 1.12 ERA) allowed two unearned runs and two hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked none.
Matt O’Brien (1-0, 3.27) went the distance in the second game, striking out seven and walking one in a two-hitter.
Wells started a five-run sixth for Oneonta, taking second on a two-base error by left fielder Michael Daniel to open the inning. Sizemore followed with an RBI single to center and took second on the throw home.
Deik Scram and Boesch followed with RBI doubles, and Brandon Timm had a run-scoring single to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Timm, who’s batting .444, scored the final run on a throwing error by catcher Patrick Nichols.
