BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Kyle Donnelly, sr., P/SS, Oneonta

Helped the Yellowjackets (15-6) improve their win total by 10 from last year. ... "He emerged as a total player," OHS coach Joe Hughes said. "As a hitter, as a fielder, as a pitcher and as a team leader. He emerged in all those areas as a top quality player and someone who has a bright baseball future." Led OHS in hitting (.500), sacrifices (five) and runs scored (30). Was second on team in RBIs (19), triples (three), home runs (two), stolen bases (seven) and walks (13). ... Also went 4-2 with a 1.60 ERA, striking out 60 and walking eight in 48 innings. ... Will attend Division II University of[an error occurred while processing this directive] New Haven on a partial baseball scholarship. ... Daily Star first-teamer last year.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Gary Backus, 16th season, Walton

Involved in Walton athletics for 30 years, Backus helped the Warriors to their best season in his 16 years as coach, going 14-3-1. ... Walton won a league championship for the first time since 1973, beating three-time defending champion Unatego, 3-2, in the Midstate Athletic Conference championship game. ... After an 0-2-1 start, the Warriors won 14 consecutive games, a record streak for a Backus-coached team. ... "This team had chemistry," Backus said. "We enjoyed each other — we laughed and cried with each other." ... Warriors went 5-1 in one-run games.

DAILY STAR BASEBALL FIRST TEAM ALL-STARS

Frank Petroskey, jr. SS, Cooperstown

Set school records in hits (40), RBIs (34) and triples (6). ... Batted .506 and finished with 17 extra-base hits. ... Highlighted strong junior season at shortstop with 18-game hitting streak. ... Contributed 20 stolen bases. ... Earned Division II first-team All-Star honors in the Center State Conference. ... "He’s comparable to other top players in the area," Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. "I have Frank and (sophomore catcher) Philip (Pohl) coming back, and I wouldn’t trade them for anyone."

Philip Pohl, soph. C, Cooperstown

Division II MVP of Center State Conference picked off 11 runners (six at second, five at first). ... "As a catcher, he controlled my pitching staff," Cooperstown coach Frank Miosek said. "Nobody ever got a double off a single because they couldn’t steal off him." ... Batted .508 and had an on-base percentage of .666. ... Had 34 runs, 18 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and 12 doubles. ... Yielded two passed balls and committed three errors. ... Helped team finish 16-6 after Redskins went 5-10 in 2005. ... Received second-team all-state honors in Class C, along with teammate Frank Petroskey.

Pat Simonds, sr. SS, Sidney

Three-sport standout batted .513 and helped the Warriors to a 15-7 record. ... Hit five home runs and finished with 32 RBIs, six doubles and three triples. ... Also stole 12 bases. ... First-team selection in Midstate Athletic Conference who received fourth-team all-state honors in Class B from the New York State Sports Writers Association earlier this month. ... Daily Star first-teamer as a sophomore third baseman earned an honorable mention last season, mainly because he battled injuries as a junior. ... Will join Colgate football team as a wide receiver this fall.

Hyde Clarke, sr. P/IF, CV-S

Tri-Valley League first-team All-Star batted .534 with 34 runs, 31 hits, 26 RBIs and 17 walks. ... Batted third in lineup for T-V champion Cherry Valley-Springfield (13-4). ... Went 6-1 with 1.55 ERA, 91 strikeouts and 18 walks in 50 innings. ... Former No. 1 catcher of Patriots played every infield position to save arm for pitching. ... "He took right over as being the leader of the team," CV-S coach Ed Dubben said. "He also has a nice, short compact swing. He’s a very disciplined hitter." ... Tied school record with 18 strikeouts in 10-0 no-hitter against Milford on April 24. ... Headed to Oneonta State.

Sean Fisher, jr. P/IF, Walton

Midstate Athletic Conference first team All-Star batted .298 with two doubles and eight RBIs. ... Went 5-1 with 1.67 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings. ... Also played shortstop and third base for MAC champion Walton (14-3-1), which ended Unatego’s title run at three with a 3-2 victory on May 18. ... Fisher earned victory in MAC title matchup, allowing five hits in a complete game. ... "Sean has worked extremely hard," Walton coach Gary Backus said. "When he gets in a groove, he can really fire it." ... Threw no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in 5-0 win over Bainbridge-Guilford on May 13.

Matt Laymon, soph. P/1B, Edmeston

Tri-Valley League first-team All-Star was one of the most dominant pitchers in the area, finishing 5-1 with a 1.24 ERA. ... Struck out 75 in 39 2-3 innings and held opponents to .133 batting average. ... Class D second-team all-state selection who struck out 13 in sectional championship loss to Deposit on June 4. ... Hit .404 with 27 runs and three homers as the Panthers clean-up batter. ... Daily Star and Tri-Valley second-team All-Star as a freshman has helped Edmeston to 44-4 record over last two seasons. ... Struck out varsity-high 15 in 19-4 victory over visiting Unadilla Valley on May 6.

Shane Hubbard, sr. 3B, Roxbury

Batted .612 with 37 RBIs, 35 runs and 11 extra-base hits as the No. 3 hitter for the Delaware League champion Rockets (14-3). ... "He pretty much dominated," Roxbury coach Ryan Funck said. "I don’t know if there’s any better player in the Delaware League." ... Went 37-for-37 as a junior and 43-for-43 in stolen bases this past season, swiping home four times. ... "They tried to keep him close, but he’s the most aggressive kid I’ve ever seen," Funck said. "He could get a lead twice as big as anybody else and only slid headfirst into second twice because it was close."

Kevin Campbell, sr. SS/P, Unatego

Daily Star First Team All-Star for the second straight season batted .333 for the Spartans (15-6) and had 24 RBIs and 22 runs. ... Earned Midstate Athletic Conference first-team All-Star honors as a utility player, batting .394 against league opponents. ... Went team-best 5-0 on the mound with 2.67 ERA, 54 strikeouts and 12 walks in 36 2/3 innings. ... "He definitely deserves this," Unatego coach Frank Microni said. "He did so many important things for us all-around." ... Daily Star First Team All-Star in football at defensive back plans to play baseball at Division III Ithaca College.

Andy Jackson, sr. P/3B, Walton

Midstate Athletic Conference first team All-Star batted .475 with 20 RBIs and 10 doubles as clean-up hitter for MAC champion Walton (14-3-1), which won 14 in a row during the season. ... Finished 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA and 28 strikeouts on the mound. ... "He was our power guy," Walton coach Gary Backus said. "He is very dependable and hard-working guy."... Came back from season-ending shoulder injuries suffered in Week 2 of the football season to complete his senior baseball season. ... Plans to attend SUNY Cobleskill this fall.

Ryan Laymon, sr. P/SS, Edmeston

Daily Star Baseball Player of the Year in 2005 went 35-for-35 in stolen-base attempts this past season for Section Four Class D runner-up Edmeston (19-4). ... Went 7-3 with a 3.32 ERA and struck out 45 in 44 1/3 innings. ... Batted .467 as leadoff hitter, had 12 doubles and drew 30 walks. ... Class D first-team all-state selection who won 16 consecutive games pitched dating back to freshman year. ... "He loved nothing more than to win," Edmeston coach Mike Clark said. "He led by example and was a constant hustler and gamer."... Plans to play baseball at Division II Mansfield College.
