Lane Potter hit two doubles and Kyle Donnelly struck out 14, but Oneonta Post 259 lost its opening game in the District 6 Tournament, 6-4, to Cortland on Sunday at Vestal High.
Cortland catcher Sean Finucane homered in the fourth and eighth innings, the latter giving Vestal a 6-4 lead.
Oneonta took a 3-1 advantage into the sixth inning, when Cortland scored four times off Donnelly (5-1). Donnelly, The Daily Star Player of the Year for high school baseball, allowed nine hits and walked two in the scheduled nine-inning game.
Aaron Galutz’s two-run single put Cortland ahead, 4-3, in the sixth. Galutz’s older brother, Brandon, plays for On[an error occurred while processing this directive]eonta State.
"The only two balls that were hit hard were the home runs, but they did a good job of going the other way with (Donnelly’s) offspeed stuff," Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Cortland.
Finucane’s first homer put Cortland ahead, 1-0. The Green Wave (20-11) came back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lance Ratchford highlighted the rally with a two-run single.
Oneonta then loaded the bases with one out but failed to score again off winning pitcher Stephen Wright.
"We had a chance to expand the lead to 4, 5 or 6-1, but couldn’t get the big hit," Jester said.
Oneonta faces a long road in the losers’ bracket of the 14-team, double-elimination tournament. Next up is Horseheads at 2 p.m. today at Johnson City High.
