Pitching paces O-Tigers

O’Brien solid in 4-1 win at Williamsport

2006 ONEONTA TIGERS

Staff Report

Strong pitching led the Oneonta Tigers to a 4-1 New York-Penn League baseball victory at the Williamsport Crosscutters on Tuesday.

Oneonta starter Matt O’Brien improved to 4-1 after scattering seven hits and allowing one earned run in six innings. He struck out four and walked one to help the O-Tigers win the opener of a three-game series in Williamsport. The second game starts at 7:05 tonight.

Oneonta improved to 20-13 and remained in second place, 1½ games behind the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats (22-12). Tr[an error occurred while processing this directive]i-City, which beat Jamestown, 10-9, on Tuesday, visits Damaschke Field for a 7 p.m. game Friday against the O-Tigers. The two teams also will play in the annual NY-Penn Hall of Fame Weekend game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.

Randor Bierd, Derek Witt and Brett Jensen each threw one inning of scoreless relief Tuesday. Jensen struck out two in the ninth and earned his eighth save of the season.

Oneonta scored in the first inning, capitalizing on the first of three throwing errors by Williamsport shortstop Angel Gonzalez. Scott Sizemore beat Gonzalez’s errant throw to first for an infield single with two out and took second on the play. Losing pitcher Kyle Pearson (1-1) walked the next three batters, bringing in Sizemore for a 1-0 Oneonta lead.

Williamsport (10-21) tied it in the fourth on an RBI single to right field by Daniel Rios. The Tigers took the lead for good on Ryan Strieby’s RBI grounder up the middle in the fifth.

Brandon Timm tripled in a run in the eighth before Deik Scram capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Joe Tucker and Strieby had two hits apiece to pace Oneonta at the plate.
