AREA SPORTS BRIEFS Windham golf pro misses out in playoff
Windham Country Club golf pro Brian Lowe finished third in the Northeastern New York Section PGA Senior Club Professional Championship, which ran Tuesday at the Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington, Mass.
Lowe shot 74-74148 over the two-day event to force a tie for second with Paul Jaycox of the Onteora Club. Jaycox won the first hole in a sudden-death playoff to earn one of two qualifying spots in the 2006 PGA Senior Club Professional Championship. The event runs Oct. 19-22 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Lowe will be the first alternate.
Host PGA Professional Tom Sullivan won the NENY event with a two-day total of 6-under-par 134 (65-69).
SUNYDelhi’s Thomas Philion finished in a two-way tie for fifth (77-77154).
The final qualifier the NENY PGA Senior Stroke Play champion will be determined Aug. 25 at the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass.

Seven area masters athletes will compete in the Empire State Games this week in Rochester.
Hartwick resident Doug Geertgens, 63, qualified in seven track and field events the 100 meters, 200, 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump and will compete in the 60-64 age-group.
Other locals scheduled to appear as follows:

Dillon Maier, 71 (70-74), Oneonta: Pentathlon.

PLAY Ball at Baseball Hall set for Friday
The National Baseball Hall of Fame’s annual charity event PLAY Ball is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith, George Brett and Ryne Sandberg, along with former Negro leaguer Buck O’Neil, will participate in the event, which supports the Hall’s education programs and museum outreach.
A tax-deductible donation of $750 for non-members and $500 for Friends of the Hall of Fame is required for participation. On-field interaction with the special guests, mementos, a brick signed by all four guests, a DVD of the morning’s activities, an autographed baseball, a photo and a cap are included.

Golf event at Colonial Ridge set for Saturday
The second annual John Dodge Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday at the Colonial Ridge Golf Course in Laurens.
Proceeds will benefit the Zion Episcopal Church in Morris.

Golf tournament slated for Saturday
Stamford Golf Club will hold its "Queen of the Catskills" Tournament on Saturday.
The tournament will be formatted as a two-girl scramble and also will have individual flights. Prizes will be awarded for low net and low gross, as well as two hole-in-one competitions.
Entry fee is $45, which includes greens fees, cart, prizes, lunch and a practice round.

Basketball tourney set for Saturday
Spartan Hoops Basketball will sponsor a 3-on-3 tournament at Unatego Central on Saturday. Registration starts at 8 a.m., but teams can pre-register.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. and features varsity, junior varsity and modified divisions for boys and girls.
Cost is $40 with a maximum of four players per team.

Gaelic football to be featured at Irish festival
The 2006 Great American Irish Festival will feature the second annual Gaelic Football Tournament on Saturday at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds in Frankfort.
A hurling clinic starts at noon Saturday and will be followed by a 4-on-4 exhibition match. The Gaelic Football Tournament follows at 1:30 p.m.
Both events are included with paid festival admission.

The Stamford Golf Club will host the second annual Queen of the Catskills Golf Tournament on Saturday.
Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. for the two-girl scramble tournament, which will have a shotgun start and feature four hole-in-one prizes .
Entry costs $45 per player and includes greens fees, a cart, a practice round, a continental breakfast, snacks and lunch. Entries must be received by Thursday. The event is limited to the first 72 players.

The regional chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) will hold its annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend meeting at 6 p.m. Sunday at Tillapaugh’s Funeral Home (28 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown).
This event is free and open to the public.

Soccer Hall of Fame Game tickets on sale
Tickets for the 2006 National Soccer Hall of Fame Game between the Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls are on sale.
Tickets can be purchased at the Soccer Hall in Oneonta or through Ticketmaster outlets throughout the state, at the website http://www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 607-722-7272. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the event.
The game starts at 1 p.m. Aug. 28 on At-A-Glance Field at the Wright National Soccer Campus.
Alexi Lalas, Carla Overbeck, Al Trost and Philip Anschutz will be honored during the 2006 Induction Ceremony, which starts at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Soccer Hall. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
