Empire State Games: Area Roundup

The following is a look how area athletes fared Thursday after the first day of the Empire State Games in Rochester:

BOYS SOCCER

Central 3, Hudson Valley 1

Sidney sophomore Mike Guerriere scored a goal and had an assist in leading the Central team to victory.

Guerriere assisted on Lucas Heffron’s goal 25 minutes into the second half that snapped a 1-all tie. Guerriere’s goal came five minutes later.

BOYS BASEBALL

Hudson Valley 6, Central 3

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Cooperstown teammates Frank Petroskey, a senior second baseman, and Philip Pohl, a junior designated hitter, each went 0-for-3 in Central’s loss.

Pohl scored a run.

Long Island 68, Central 66

Oneonta junior Dan O’Brien scored four points and Bainbridge-Guilford senior Willie McGinnis had two in Central’s loss.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Mike Schmidt of Oneonta is fourth out of six competitors after the first five events in the open decathlon.

Schmidt finished fourth in the 100 meters (12.37 seconds), second in the long jump (19 feet, 11 inches), fifth in the shot put (32-8 1/2); sixth in the high jump (5-2 1/4) and fourth in the 400 (56.38).

He has 2,660 points. Leader Steve Esler has 3,608.

Oneonta’s Charles Morris finished fifth in the javelin. His best throw covered 155-2.

CYCLING

Franklin’s Michelle Costello took fourth in the open women’s 10-mile time trial. Costello crossed in 26:11.9 — nine seconds behind bronze medalist Kimberly Celecki of Barneveld.

Nick Suozzo of Franklin finished sixth out of 55 riders in the open men’s 10-mile time trial. Suozzo’s time was 23:06.3.
