Salamida lifts ’Cats past Tigers
Former Red Dragons pitcher solid in 4-1 victory at Doubleday
2006 ONEONTA TIGERS
Staff Report
Chris Salamida had a Hall of Fame kind of Saturday.
Two months removed from his junior baseball season at Oneonta State, Salamida struck out seven in six solid innings to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats to a rain-shortened, 4-1 New York-Penn League victory over the Oneonta Tigers.
Left-hander Salamida (4-1, 0.81 ERA) kept the Tigers guessing throughout the NY-Penn’s annual Hall of Fame Weekend game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. He scattered five hits, walked one and allowed one earned run en route to his fourth straight victory as the Tigers dropped their third game in a row.
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Oneonta scored its run in the sixth, ending a string of 17 scoreless innings by Salamida.
Joe Tucker led off with a walk, and Scott Sizemore followed with a one-out single to right. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, setting up Brennan Boesch’s RBI groundout to third. With Tri-City’s infield playing in, Tucker broke on contact and scored to cut the deficit to 2-1. Third baseman Chris Johnson, who cleanly fielded Boesch’s roller, pumped toward home but went for the sure out at first.
Salamida ended his outing by striking out Santo De Leon. Tri-City then took a 4-1 lead in the seventh as Jordan Parraz hit a two-run homer to center off Oneonta reliever Casey Fien.
Heavy rain forced umpires to call the game after Tri-City reliever Cesar Mayora struck out Brandon Timm swinging for the first out in the O-Tigers’ seventh.
Parraz doubled to start a two-run rally in the fifth off Oneonta starter Zach Piccola, who fell to 0-3 after allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Parraz stole third and scored when shortstop Sizemore overthrew home on Jhon Florentino’s grounder. Florentino reached third on the same play as Piccola retrieved the ball and threw it into left field.
Florentino then made it 2-0, scoring on Justin Tellam’s groundout to second baseman Tucker.
Parraz and Maxwell Sapp had two hits apiece to pace the ValleyCats. Sizemore led Oneonta with a 2-for-3 effort, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
