Former O-State coach honored

The SUNY Athletic Conference announced Thursday the Pitcher of the Year award will be named in honor of former Oneonta State baseball coach Don Axtell.

Axtell coached the Red Dragons for 30 years before retiring in 1995. His teams won or shared 10 SUNYAC titles. He was selected the conference’s coach of the year four times, the last coming in 1989.

Oneonta resident Axtell was selected to the Oneonta State Hall of Fame in 2001.
