OHS graduate named head golf pro in Fla.

The Heritage Pines Country Club in Hudson, Fla., recently named Oneonta High graduate Kevin Burnsworth its Head Golf Professional.

A state champion as an OHS senior in 1982, Burnsworth was selected from a pool of 53 candidates by the private, 600-member club.

Burnsworth, who earned a golf scholarship and graduated from Old Dominion University, had been the head pro at The International Golf Club in Bolton, Mass. He also held positions at the Florida-based Seven Springs Country Club, at the Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester and at the Country Club of Ithaca.

OHS grad named associate SID at O-State

Oneonta State named Oneonta native Sandra Moxley its associate sports information director, the college announced Friday.

Moxley, who graduated from Oneonta High and O-State, is the first full-time assistant in the sports information area under eighth-year SID Geoff Hassard.

Moxley graduated from O-State in December of 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and a minor in sports management. She has served the last two years as O-State’s full-time sports information intern.

Moxley pitched four varsity seasons for O-State and is among the school’s top five all-time in five categories.

Binghamton softball team seeks two girls

The Binghamton-based BAGSAI HEAT, a 14U fastpitch softball team, is seeking two experienced outfielders for the 2006-07 season.

Soccer Hall golf event has openings

Foursomes and individuals can still register for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction 2006 Nike Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Aug. 27.

The 2006 Induction Ceremony starts at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 in the Soccer Hall and is open to the public at no cost. Alexi Lalas, Carla Overbeck, Al Trost and Philip Anschutz will be inducted.

The Hall of Fame Game follows at 1 p.m. and features the New York Red Bulls against the Columbus Crew on the Wright National Soccer Campus’ At-A-Glance Field. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 on game day and are available at the Hall or through Ticketmaster outlets.

Women’s bowling league to meet Thursday

The Time to Tan Strike and Spare Bowling League will hold its fall organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Holiday Lanes in Oneonta.

Wood bat tournament set for Oct. 21-22

The Garden State Baseball League will give a free wood bat to teams that register for its Fall Wood Bat Tournament of Champions more than 30 days in advance.

Golf tournament set for Saturday in Laurens

The sixth annual First Presbyterian Church Gilbertsville Invitational Golf Tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Colonial Ridge Golf Course in Laurens.

The four-person, captain-and-crew event is open to the public. Tournament registration will be held before tee-time.

Otsego County amateur golf is this weekend

The 29th annual Otsego County amateur golf championship will be held Saturday at the Oneonta Country Club and Sunday at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown.

A golfer’s USGA attested handicap index must be 7.2 or under to participate. Attested handicap cards should accompany entry forms for the stroke-play tournament. Players must be residents of Otsego County or belong to a county golf club.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Entry fee is $50, which includes lunch at the OCC. Carts are required at both courses.

Andes golf tournament set for Sunday

The 25th annual Iva Terry Andes Invitational Golf Tournament will be held at the Delhi College Golf Course at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Registration begins at the golf course at 10 a.m. The tournament will be a four-person captain and crew format. An awards dinner will follow at the Andes Hotel.

Glimmerglass Triathlon set for Sunday

The 24th annual Glimmerglass Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday at Glimmerglass State Park.

The race includes a 5-mile canoe sprint, a 26-mile bicycle trek and a run. Iron persons and 2-, 3- and 4-person teams are invited to participate. A corporate team category is also available. Triathletes ages 14-18 can enter for a discounted fee.

Ruffed Grouse strut set for Sunday

The Ruffed Grouse Society’s third annual Lefty Healey Chapter Strut is set for Sunday at the Binghamton Knights of Columbus.

Raffle sales start at 1 p.m. and dinner follows at 2:30 p.m. Cost is $10 for children ages 16 and younger, $35 per individual, and $45 for an individual and a guest.

Oneonta High will start more fall practices at the following times, dates and sites.

Boys and girls varsity cross country: 8 a.m. Monday at OHS.

Modified football: 8 a.m. Aug. 30 at OHS.

Boys and girls modified cross country: 8 a.m. Aug. 30 at OHS.

Girls modified swimming: 9-10:30 a.m. Aug. 30 at OHS pool.

Girls modified soccer: 2:30-3 p.m. Sept. 5 in Room 318 at OHS (meeting only).

Modified volleyball: Seventh-graders, 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 5 at Middle School gym.

Modified volleyball: Eighth-graders, 4-5:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Middle School gym.

Boys modified soccer: 3:15-4:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at Riverside Elementary.

Unatego will start more practices Monday

Unatego will start more fall sports practices as follows:

Varsity cross country: 8 a.m. Monday at Unatego.

Modified girls soccer: 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at Unadilla Elementary (parent meeting 7 p.m.).

Modified football: 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at Unatego (parent meeting at 7 p.m.).

Modified cross country: 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 30 at Unatego (parent meeting at 7 p.m.).

Modified boys soccer: 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Otego Elementary (parent meeting 7 p.m.).

Student-athletes cannot practice without completing a sports physical and must return sports physical forms.

Section Four rules meetings continue Monday

Section Four will continue to hold its fall sports rules interpretation meetings on the following dates. Coaches are encouraged to attend.

Field Hockey (preseason meeting): 5 p.m. Monday at Brothers II Restaurant in Endwell.

Soccer: 7 p.m. Monday at Union-Endicott High; 5 p.m. Tuesday at Elmira Steele Memorial Library; 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn Oneonta; 7 p.m. Thursday at SUNY Cortland’s Per Center (main entrance).

Pee-Wee football sign-ups set for Monday

Fall sign-ups and equipment distribution for Oneonta Pee-Wee Football runs from 5:15-7:15 p.m. Monday at Field 4 in Neahwa Park.

Players must be age 8 on or before Sept. 1 and must not turn age 13 on or before Sept. 1 to be eligible. All players must attend school or reside in Oneonta.

Leatherstocking to offer junior golf this week

The Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown will hold its annual Junior Golf Summer Camp from Tuesday through Friday for youths ages 8-14. The camp will culminate with a tournament for participants Friday.

Instruction will be provided from 8:30 a.m.-noon daily by course professionals Josh Truman, Matt Smith and Chris Schultis. Cost is $125 per student.

Soccer Hall of Fame Game tickets on sale

Tickets for the 2006 National Soccer Hall of Fame Game between the Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls are on sale.

Tickets can be purchased at the Soccer Hall in Oneonta or through Ticketmaster outlets throughout the state, at the website http://www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 607-722-7272. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the event.

The game starts at 1 p.m. Aug. 28 on At-A-Glance Field at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Alexi Lalas, Carla Overbeck, Al Trost and Philip Anschutz will be honored during the 2006 Induction Ceremony, which starts at 10 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Soccer Hall. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

The 23rd annual Chris Thater Memorial runs Aug. 26-27 at Recreation Park in Binghamton.

Colgate football to be featured on radio

Colgate will be broadcast in the new Division I-AA Game of the Week, the first national radio broadcast package featuring Division I-AA football. The broadcast will be on the Sports Byline Radio Network, heard on traditional radio affiliates throughout the country and also on Sirius Satellite Radio (channel 122).

Colgate’s Oct. 28 game against LaFayette will be carried as part of the package. Oneonta High graduate Geoff Bean is a senior for the Raiders. Sidney graduate Pat Simonds is an incoming freshman.

Milford modified soccer begins Sept. 1

Milford’s boys and girls modified soccer practices start Sept. 1 at a time TBA. All soccer players must have sports physicals and completed athletic contracts to participate.

DEC announces tentative waterfowl seasons

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced the tentative schedule for most of New York’s 2006-2007 waterfowl hunting seasons.

The September Canada goose season runs Sept. 1-25 in most areas of the state, with the exceptions of the Lake Champlain Zone (Sept. 5-25) and the Long Island Zone (Sept. 5-30).

The daily bag limit for Canada geese taken during September will be 8 per day (5 per day in Lake Champlain Zone).

Dates for the regular fall goose hunting seasons, when migratory Canada geese are present, will be announced in late summer, after breeding population data from northern Canada is evaluated.

The official state regulations for the 2006-2007 waterfowl seasons will be posted on the DEC’s website, http://www.dec.state.ny.us.

Seniors Open Pro-Am set for Sept. 5

The 24th annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Golf Tournament begins with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start Sept. 5 with a Pro-Am event at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown. A cocktail reception and awards banquet follows at 5 p.m.

The Pro-Am is open to golfers with established handicaps. Player packages range from $675 for one amateur entry to $6,000 for eight. Tee sponsorships are also available for $300.

Teams will consist of one Senior pro and four amateurs.

Registration deadline is July 24. Player packages are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event has raised more than $1.3 million for scholarships at Pathfinder Village, a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome.

The Seniors Open, which has a purse of $100,000, runs Sept. 6-8 at Leatherstocking.

Stock car hall inductions set for Sept. 9

The 11th annual Old-Time Stock-Car Convention will feature a reunion and the 2006 Hall of Fame inductions from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 9 at the former Mid-State Speedway at the Otsego County Fairgrounds (Route 23 in Morris).

The 2006 inductees are Chuck Akulis, Stan Wetmore and Bill Salamanca in the sportsman division; Russ Card in the figure 8s; Wayne King in the late models; and Pioneer Award winner Cliff Kotary. The Morris Fire and Rescue Dept. will be honored with the Phoenix Award as well.

Baseball Hall to honor ’Voices of the Game’

The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will continue its six-installment series featuring great baseball broadcasters with Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, the voice of the Chicago White Sox, on Sept. 9.

The series, titled "Voices of the Game" features author Curt Smith in one-hour interviews with broadcasters in the Bullpen Theater. Advance tickets are required, but each event is open at no cost to Hall visitors. Reservations can be made by calling 607-547-0397. Seating is limited.

The remaining schedule is as follows:

Sept. 16: Jon Miller, ESPN’s lead baseball broadcaster and voice of the San Francisco Giants.

Oct. 21: Joe Castiglione, voice of the Boston Red Sox.

Lower Deck Dash 5K set for Sept. 10

DEC announces youth waterfowl weekends

The annual Youth Waterfowl Hunting Weekend will run Sept. 23-34 in the Northeastern and Southeastern zones of the state, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced.

Junior hunters ages 12-15 may hunt ducks, geese and brant during this time. Juniors must be licensed and accompanied by an adult hunter, in accordance with state regulations. Only junior hunters may take birds on these days.

The Western Zone’s weekend runs Oct. 8-9, and the Long Island Zone’s weekend is Nov. 11-12.

Duck hunting seasons open in October

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the regular duck hunting seasons will begin during October in most zones.

Tentative dates are as follows:

Northeastern Zone: Oct. 7-15, Oct. 25-Dec. 14.

Southeastern Zone: Oct. 14-22, Nov. 11-Dec. 31.

Western Zone: Oct. 21-Dec. 6, Dec. 26-Jan. 7.

Long Island Zone: Nov. 22-26, Dec. 5-Jan. 28.

The official state regulations for the 2006-2007 waterfowl seasons will be posted on the DEC’s website, http://www.dec.state.ny.us.
