Fox-Tiger 5K road race set for today

The seventh annual Fox-Tiger 5K road race begins at 5 p.m. today at Damaschke Field. Excessive heat postponed the race earlier this month.
Entry is $15. Registration runs from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Damaschke Field box office. The event is held in conjunction with Hannaford Night at the ballpark.
The first 175 entrants will receive a T-shirt, two tickets to the O-Tigers’ 6 p.m. doubleheader today against the Lowell Spinners and other items.

Soccer Hall golf event has openings
[an error occurred while processing this directive]Foursomes and individuals can still register for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Induction 2006 Nike Golf Tournament, which is scheduled for Sunday at the Oneonta Country Club.

The 2006 Induction Ceremony starts at 10 a.m. Monday in the Soccer Hall and is open to the public at no cost. Alexi Lalas, Carla Overbeck, Al Trost and Philip Anschutz will be inducted.
The Hall of Fame Game follows at 1 p.m. Monday and features the New York Red Bulls against the Columbus Crew on the Wright National Soccer Campus’ At-A-Glance Field.
Tickets can be purchased at the Soccer Hall in Oneonta or through Ticketmaster outlets throughout the state, at the website http://www.ticketmaster.com or by calling Ticketmaster at 607-722-7272. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 on the day of the event.
Leatherstocking to offer junior golf this week
The Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown will hold its annual Junior Golf Summer Camp from today through Friday for youths ages 8-14. The camp will culminate with a tournament for participants Friday.
Instruction will be provided from 8:30 a.m.-noon daily by course professionals Josh Truman, Matt Smith and Chris Schultis. Cost is $125 per student.

Final OTC junior tournament set for today
The Oneonta Tennis Club will host the final tournament of the Junior Grand Prix today.
The top two players in each division will receive free trips to the 2006 U.S. Open, which runs Aug. 29 at Flushing Meadow. The standings heading into today’s final tournament are as follows:
Boys 14-and-over: 1, Joshua Moss; 2, Alex van Cott; T3, Andersen Morse; T3, Ian van Cott.
Boys 13-and-under: 1, Ian van Cott; 2, Riley Lorenz; T3, Emerson Kelby; T3, Gabe DeJoseph.
OTC to sponsor U.S. Open bus trip Aug. 29
The Oneonta Tennis Club will sponsor a bus trip to the 2006 U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows on Aug. 29.

Section Four rules meetings continue this week
Section Four will continue to hold its fall sports rules interpretation meetings on the following days. Coaches are encouraged to attend.

Thater Memorial slated for this weekend
The 23rd annual Chris Thater Memorial runs Saturday and Sunday at Recreation Park in Binghamton.
Professional, amateur and recreational bicycle races for all ages and abilities are set for this weekend.

Vintage baseball event set for Sept. 2-3
Eight vintage baseball teams will compete Sept. 2-3 in the Keator Vintage Base Ball Tournament during Turn of the Century Days in Roxbury.
The tournament will feature 11 games based on rules from 1864-1898. The Roxbury Nine will try to successfully defend its crown against the Hancock Nine, the Brooklyn Atlantics, the New York Mutuals, the New England Nine, the New York Gothams, the Providence Grays of Rhode Island and the Elizabeth Athletics.

Hunting classes to run Sept. 23-24
The Oneonta Sportsman’s Club, located on Route 28 at the top of Franklin Mountain, will hold hunter education classes from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 23-24.

Seniors Open Pro-Am set for Sept. 5
The 24th annual Otesaga Hotel Seniors Open Golf Tournament begins with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start Sept. 5 with a Pro-Am event at the Leatherstocking Golf Course in Cooperstown. A cocktail re-ception and awards banquet follows at 5 p.m.
The Pro-Am is open to golfers with established handicaps. Player packages range from $675 for one amateur entry to $6,000 for eight. Tee sponsorships are also available for $300.
Teams will consist of one Senior pro and four amateurs. The event has raised more than $1.3 million for scholarships at Pathfinder Village, a residential community dedicated to children and adults with Down syndrome. The Seniors Open, which has a purse of $100,000, runs Sept. 6-8 at Leatherstocking.

Stock car hall inductions set for Sept. 9
The 11th annual Old-Time Stock-Car Convention will feature a reunion and the 2006 Hall of Fame inductions from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 9 at the former Mid-State Speedway at the Otsego County Fairgrounds (Route 23 in Morris).
The 2006 inductees are Chuck Akulis, Stan Wetmore and Bill Salamanca in the sportsman division; Russ Card in the figure 8s; Wayne King in the late models; and Pioneer Award winner Cliff Kotary. The Morris Fire and Rescue Dept. will be honored with the Phoenix Award as well.

Baseball Hall to honor ’Voices of the Game’
The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown will continue its six-installment series featuring great baseball broadcasters with Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, the voice of the Chicago White Sox, on Sept. 9.
The series, titled "Voices of the Game" features author Curt Smith in one-hour interviews with broadcasters in the Bullpen Theater. Advance tickets are required, but each event is open at no cost to Hall visitors. Reservations can be made by calling 607-547-0397. Seating is limited. The remaining schedule is as follows:
Sept. 16: Jon Miller, ESPN’s lead baseball broadcaster and voice of the San Francisco Giants.
