Davenport wins big after bad break

Sweeper Ballard out for rematch of 2005 sectional D final; Guerriere leads Sidney

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER

Staff Report

Something will be missing Saturday when Davenport meets Edmeston in a rematch of the 2005 Section Four Class D championship boys soccer game.

The Wildcats opened its 2006 season Friday with a 6-0 thumping of Morris in the first round of the Edmeston Kickoff Tournament, setting up a title game against the defending sectional champion Panthers at noon Saturday.

But Davenport will be without senior sweeper Joe Ballard on Saturday, when it attempts to avenge last season’s 3-2 sectional final loss in overtime.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]Wildcats coach Jennifer Henderson said Ballard broke his left clavicle inside the first 10 minutes of Friday’s opener and could need up to four weeks to heal.

"It wasn’t really a play," Henderson said. "He just kind of ran into another kid and fell down. He thought he was OK and went back in, but he touched the ball once and knew something was wrong.

"He’s not out for the season," she continued. "It was a clean break and it realigned itself already."

Ballard, a Daily Star First Team All-Star last season, left the game about six minutes after Nate Lorber converted a pass from Brandon Butts for a 1-0 lead. Butts finished with three goals and two assists for Davenport, which got five saves apiece from goalies Brandon Cuddy and Brad Teator.

Edmeston beat Cherry Valley-Springfield, 4-0, in Friday’s other first-round game. CV-S and Morris meet in the consolation game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Cherry Valley-Springfield took eight more shots and six more corner kicks than the host team, but the Patriots had no answer for Colin Bliss in the first round of the Edmeston Kickoff Tournament.

Bliss finished with three goals and an assist for the Panthers, who received 10 saves from goalie Nick Benjamin.

"They were (focused on stopping Bliss), but that’s where his foot skills came into play," first-year Edmeston coach Ed Wheeldon said. "He went through a couple guys and put the ball into the net."

Senior Bliss, a Daily Star First Team All-Star in 2005, scored the first three goals.

Wheeldon estimated the Patriots had the ball in Edmeston’s end for 60 percent of the game. CV-S outshot Edmeston, 21-13, and had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

"There were some nervous moments," Wheeldon said. "They had the ball in our end an awful lot. (Benjamin) came up with some pretty nice saves — a couple of point-blank shots and he punched two over the top."

It’s only one game into the season, but Sidney sophomore Mike Guerriere appears ready to exceed the 36 goals and 11 assists he had last season.

Two-time Daily Star First-Team All-Star Guerriere had three goals and one assist — all in the first half — in leading the host Warriors over Bainbridge-Guilford in the first round of the Mang Tournament.

Guerriere scored five minutes in, then set up freshman Josh Edwards for a goal with 34 minutes left in the first half.

"We went from a 4-4-2 alignment to a 4-3-3 and they didn’t pick him up," Sidney coach Steve Hornung said of Edwards. "Mike hit him from about 15 yards."

Steve Walker set up Sidney’s third goal, sending a long pass from the midfield to Guerriere at the right side of the box. Guerriere lined a hard shot to the far post to make it 3-0 at the 28-minute mark of the first half.

"I thought we moved the ball very well in the first half," Hornung said.

Adam Sprague scored two goals in the second half for the Bobcats.

Sidney plays Windsor in the title game at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Black Knights defeated Chenango Valley, 6-1, Friday.

B-G plays CV in the consolation game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Pinto’s goal with 16 minutes, 50 seconds left snapped a 1-all tie. Mike Maben dribbled down the right side before crossing the ball to Julius Starr, who lofted a pass to the far post. Pinto volleyed the ball in from 5 yards.

Leo Steffen’s goal off an assist from Mark Cioccari 3½ minutes into the second half tied the score.

"Stamford had quite a few opportunities," Windham coach Jim Adair said of the Indians, who held a 19-15 advantage in shots. "(Post) only started a few games late last season, so he’s still pretty green in the net. But he played well today, and Stamford did test him."

Windham plays Sept. 7 in its Delaware League opener at Jefferson.
