OHS boys open with win, tie

Davenport avenges sectional final loss to Panthers with 2-1 win

Staff Report

A corning defender’s hustling save on what seemed to be a goal by Alex VanDeusen was all that kept Oneonta High from a 2-0 to start to the boys soccer season Sunday.

Instead, the Yellowjackets and visiting Corning played to a 0-0 tie, leaving Oneonta with a 1-0-1 record.

VanDeusen took a shot that went past Corning goalie Ben Howitt.

"A defender came out of nowhere to clear the ball," Oneonta coach Alex Brannan said. "We were all watching the play and couldn’t believe he got to the ball."

Howitt finished with nine saves and Oneonta’s Chris Hayen made 14 saves.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]In its opener Saturday, Aaron Gallusser scored two goals in Oneonta’s 2-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory over visiting Norwich.

Gallusser scored midway through the second half and then scored an insurance goal with 30 seconds left.

The Yellowjackets, coming off a 6-10-1 season, received nine saves from Hayen.

Oneonta travels to Owego on Wednesday.
