Staff Report
Oneonta State came within a goal of setting a school record Sunday, beating New York City Tech, 15-0, in the Valiant Cup consolation match at Manhattanville.
Ryan Grady, Keith Manscuk, Edwin Angel and Michael Eason all scored three goals for the Red Dragons, who led, 8-0, at halftime.
O-State scored 16 goals against New Paltz on Oct. 24, 1973. The Red Dragons broke the school record for assists in a game with 12 one more than the 1973 game against New Paltz.
Grady, Eason, Christian Martinez and Ryohei Hirosa each had two assists.
Manscuk had the first two goals, scoring 4 minutes, 49 seconds into play and 7:25 into play. Angel and Martinez scored 11 seconds pa[an error occurred while processing this directive]rt in the second half to make it 10-0.
The Red Dragons (3-2) scored 15 goals on 18 shots.
O-State lost its opener in the tournament, 2-1, to Manhattanville.
Justin Brooks-Ward scored the winner for Manhattanville with 5:47 to play.
Manscuk scored for O-State in the second half to tie the score at 1.
New York University defeated Manhattanville, 2-0, in the title game.
Men’s Tennis Flower City Tournament
First singles player Matthew Steinhauser won all three of his matches, helping Oneonta State to a 2-1 record in the Flower City Tournament at the University of Rochester.
O-State defeated Stevens Tech (N.J.), 8-1, Friday in its season-opening match; St. Lawrence, 5-4, Saturday, before losing in the title match, 7-2, to the host school Sunday.
Steinhauser dropped the first set to the University of Rochester’s Jeff Titconbe on Sunday, 6-2. Steinhauser led, 3-2, in the second set when Titconbe retired.
O-State’s first doubles team of Eric Bratt and Shaun Goodman defeated Thanos Kantarelis and Eric Hanson, 8-6. Bratt and Goodman broke serve to take a 6-5 lead.
Against St. Lawrence, O-State junior Shane Raymo defeated Pete Abernathy, 6-3, 6-1, at third singles.
In the victory over Stevens Tech, Steinhauser beat Coby Attias, 6-2, 6-1.
The Red Dragons compete in the ECAC Tournament in Poughkeepsie on Saturday and Sunday.
Volleyball
New Paltz Invitational
Oneonta State split a pair of matches Saturday, losing to eventual champion New Paltz and beating Elmira College to finish second in the two-day New Paltz Invitational.
All-tournament selection Mae Eddinger had 41 digs in O-State’s 30-32, 30-19, 30-27, 30-24 loss to New Paltz.
Cait Welch had 13 kills and 26 digs; Caitlin Ross had 14 kills and eight digs and Jess Ptasnick had 17 assists for the Red Dragons.
In a 30-28, 30-28, 30-18 victory over Elmira, Eddinger had 16 digs; Courtney Wavercak had seven kills, four aces and five digs; Christine LaGuardia had 14 digs and six aces; and Denise Hardy had six kills and three digs.
O-State (8-5) plays in the first SUNYAC Round Robin Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons open against Potsdam.
Field Hockey
Geneseo 3, O-State 2
Sarah Buchanan scored out of a group of players in the 67th minute as Geneseo rallied for a SUNY Athletic Conference victory on the road.
The Blue Knights trailed, 2-1, with less than 15 minutes to play. Jeanine Tripepi tied the score in the 58th minute. It was Tripepi’s second goal of the game.
Marissa Chiapperino and Kathryn Kubryk scored for the Red Dragons (3-3, 0-1), who were outshot, 27-4.
Cross Country
O-State Airfield Invitational
Senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan finished third in 16 minutes, 57 seconds over a 4,500-meter course to lead O-State to a third-place finish out of six teams.
The Red Dragons had 90 points. Ithaca won with 30 and Cortland was second with 36.
Senior Amanda Villari was 22nd (19:02) and freshman Chelsea Bendert was 36th (19:42.
Senior Ryan Wells paced the mens team with a 13th-place finish in 20:29 over the 6,000-meter course.
The Red Dragons finished third out of nine teams with 101 points. Cortland won the title with 17 points and Ithaca was second with 97.
Senior Nick Scalfone was 16th for O-State in 20:42, Alex Grout was 19th (20:58) and Matt Durkin was 20th (20:59).
