Oneonta State women nip Cortland on 2nd-half goal

Staff Report

Sophomore Sarah Begley scored in the 55th minute Friday, leading host Oneonta State to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over Cortland in the SUNY Athletic Conference.

Begley scored from inside the box off an assist from Kirsten Clapper, who had a first-half goal negated by an offsides call.

O-State (7-1 overall, 3-0 SUNYAC) outshot Cortland, 23-1, including an 11-0 advantage during the first half.

Goalie Megan Thayer made eight saves in the first half for Cortland (3-3, 1-1) and finished with 11.

Jeannine Marra made one save in the shutout for Oneonta, which hosts Oswego at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Freshman forward Sam Galm scored her fourth goal of the season, but Hartwick dropped a non-conference game to visiting Geneseo (5-2). Galm’s goal came in the 64th minute.

Hartwick (2-4), which received 10 saves from Ashley King, hosts Washington & Jefferson at 1 p.m. Saturday.

SUNYAC Tournament

Ashley Gerace served the first 17 points in a row as Oneonta State capped a 2-0 start during SUNYAC Round Robin Tournament at Plattsburgh with a 30-3, 30-15, 30-16 victory over SUNYIT.

Gerace also had eight aces and eight assists for the Red Dragons (10-5, 2-0), who opened the tournament with a three-game sweep of Potsdam.

Gerace had 15 assists and Sarah Zimmerman had seven kills, four digs and three blocks in the 30-25, 30-23, 30-21 win.

Oneonta plays Cortland at 10 a.m. Saturday, New Paltz at 2 p.m. and host Plattsburgh at 4 p.m.

SUNY Cobleskill swept host Herkimer, 30-20, 30-17, 30-16, for a Mountain Valley Conference volleyball victory.

With the victory Cobleskill moves to 8-4 overall on the year with a 2-0 mark in MVC play. The Fighting Tigers currently hold the sixteenth position in the current NJCAA Division III National Poll.

Senior middle hitter Amanda Carfora led the Fighting Tigers (8-4, 2-0) with 15 kills, seven blocks and four aces.

Senior middle hitter Keiko Wantanabe contributed 13 kills and four blocks, and senior outside hitter Michelle Radley had 12 kills and three digs for Cobleskill, which is ranked 16th among NJCAA Division III programs.

Senior setter Krista Cohn had 22 assists and seven digs, senior outside hitter Cassie Putnam contributed five digs, and freshman libero Catherine Fraietta had 10 digs and a block.

The Fighting Tigers host the eight-team SUNY Cobleskill Invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.

&bodytext;’Wick players all-tournament

Hartwick junior libero Mary Janczak and junior setter Erica Henderson earned all-tournament honors this past week.

Janczak, who has 31 aces and averages a team-high 7.4 digs, made the all-tournament teams for the Oneonta State and Union invitationals.

Henderson, an Oneonta all-tournament pick, is averaging a team-best 7.4 assists Hartwick. She has 331 assists this season.

The Hawks will participate in the Lycoming Tournament this weekend.
