Storm blasts Greene

Staff Report

Unadilla Valley scored three times in a 10-minute span during the first half of a 3-2 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over visiting Greene on Friday.

Trailing, 1-0, Juston Parks scored on a direct kick 19 minutes into the first half. Five minutes later, Raffi Perry gave the Storm the lead and Andy Hayes closed it out five minutes later for a 3-1 lead.

"Our offense really played well in the first half and I thought the second half we kind of held on," Unadilla Valley coach Matt Osborne said. "Greene’s a good team and put a lot of pressure on us in the second half."

The Storm started the season 0-2, but have won five straight.

"We only have 13 guys on the team, so there’s a lot of bonding going on and everyone is playing great," Osborne said. "I don’t think (teams) can key on one guy. We have a lot of guys who can score and are distributing the ball well."

Unadilla Valley sweeper Dan Harrington had an assist and was also a key to the defense, Osborne said.

"He was able to cut off a lot of their runs crossing the field or to the goal," said Osborne, whose team plays host to Unatego on Monday.

After Sidney sophomore Mike Guerriere scored the last of his four goals, a hard shot from 18 yards, Walton coach Paul Olsen asked his goalie, Brian Schuppel, what he thought of Guerriere’s shot.

"That was awesome," Olsen said of Schuppel’s reply.

Two of Guerriere’s goals came in the first half, when host Sidney built a 3-0 lead in the Midstate Athletic Conference game.

Guerriere’s goal with 8:08 left in the first half made it 3-0. He beat three Walton defenders on a drive across the middle of the field before shooting inside the far post from 18 yards.

"You can’t let the kids get down," Olsen said of Guerriere’s play. "What are you going to do? We played well but he’s just that much of a factor."

Josh Edwards scored two goals for Sidney.

Cody Tweedie and Bryan Backus scored in the second half for Walton.

Host Chenango Forks scored twice late in the first half _ the first coming on a 25-yard shot by Michelle Grady with eight minutes left in the first half of the Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

"It was a 25-yard laser from the dead center of the field into the upper right hand corner," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "It was a great play by their best player."

The Blue Devils’ second goal came on a own goal by the Yellowjackets. Mackey said it came following a corner kick and after the ball deflected around in the box an OHS player hit it into the goal.

"There were so many people in there, we didn’t even attribute it to anyone," Mackey said.

OHS had three consecutive corner kicks in the second half and Mackey said OHS had chances on each kick, but couldn’t finish.

"Overall, other than the New Hartford game, it was as well as we’ve played, as surprising as that might sound in a 2-0 loss," said Mackey, whose 6-4 team plays at Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday. "They’re one of the better teams in (Class) B. We’re very, very optimistic from this point on. We feel like we’re building something."
