’Wick men open ASC season with 3-1 win

Adam Mitchinson scored two goals Saturday to lead the Hartwick College men’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Philadelphia in the Atlantic Soccer Conference opener for both teams.

Mitchinson scored on a header in the 29th minute and converted a corner kick from Barry Pearson in the 74th minute, the latter for the final margin.

Senior defender Craig Potter gave the Hawks (4-5-1) a 2-0 lead in the 59th minute when he converted a penalty shot. Matt Tompkins scored in the 73rd minute for Philadelphia (3-4).

Hartwick goalie Joe Gibson made one save for his fourth victory this season. Hartwick is at New Jersey Institute of Technology for an ASC game Tuesday.

&bodytext;Husson 20, Hartwick 19

Joe Melcher blocked an extra-point attempt by Hartwick kicker Joe Gatta, who missed another with 1:42 left as Husson held on for a non-conference victory.

Hartwick (1-2) scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but Husson (3-1) beat an Empire 8 affiliate for the third time this season.

Lindy Crea scored on a 2-yard run and a 42-yard reception from Jason Boltus, who scored on a 1-yard run as well. Boltus hit Crea for a 68-yard pass during the final scoring drive, which started at the Hartwick 20 with 4:56 to play.

Husson limited Crea to 36 yards on 12 carries, but he caught six passes for 173 receiving yards. Crea also amassed 81 yards on two kick returns. Boltus completed 20 of 36 passes for 399 yards. He was intercepted once.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

The Hawks visit St. John Fisher for an Empire 8 game Saturday.

&headline;Women’s Soccer

&bodytext;Hartwick 2, Alfred 0

Freshman Cristina Rodriguez-Ruiz scored her first collegiate goal in the 26th minute of Hartwick’s Empire 8 victory at the Wright National Soccer Campus. Alesha Wright and Jenny Zagrodzki earned assists on the play.

Trish Shorey capped the scoring with 5 seconds left for Hartwick (2-6, 1-1), converting a pass from Nichole Decker (Unatego).

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Taylor earned her second shutout of the season, sending Alfred University to an 0-7 record. Hartwick hosts Ithaca on Thursday.

Host Washington & Jefferson answered Annie Yager’s goal off a corner by Jenev Schilling with three straight scores in an Empire 8 victory. Yager contributed an unassisted goal for the Hawks (2-4, 0-2), who received three saves from Jamie Loreto.

Hartwick, which visits Elmira on Tuesday, held advantages of 20-10 in shots and 11-3 in penalty corners.

Emily Hughes, Katie Petosa, Betsy Breaznell, Lauren Aquino and Joanna Rudy earned singles victories for the Hawks (6-3) in an Empire 8 rout at home. Hartwick hosts Union College on Tuesday.

&bodytext;Lycoming Tournament

Hartwick (5-10) dropped two non-conference matches at the Lycoming Tournament, falling, 30-23, 30-22, 30-20, to Widener and 30-22, 30-22, 30-28 to the tournament host.

Erica Henderson (20 assists), Abby Cummings (eight kills, 18 digs) and Mary Janczak (21 digs) paced Hartwick against Widener. Melissa Small and Melissa Mueller-Douglas combined for seven blocks.

Against Lycoming, Henderson had 11 assists, Cummings had 10 kills, and Kelsey Heider contributed 11 assists.

The Hawks host the Holiday Inn Tournament this weekend in Binder Gymnasium.
