Sidney clinches league crown

Staff Report

Sophomore Stephanie Meno scored two goals and had two assists in leading Sidney to a 4-1 victory Tuesday night at Unadilla Valley that clinched the Warriors’ second straight Midstate Athletic Conference girls soccer title.

Meno, who leads Sidney with 19 goals and 10 assists this season, scored 2 minutes, 5 seconds into play. She then assisted on Nicole Philpott’s goal that made it 2-0 with 13:51 left in the first half.

Philpott’s goal came on a volley from 8 yards after Meno crossed the ball into the box.

Danielle Gravel had a goal and an assist for Sidney (14-4, 11-3), which received help from Unatego on Tuesday. Bainbridge-Guilford could have clinched the league title with a victory over the Spartans, but fell, 2-1, at Unatego.

After a slow start to the season, Sidney made some adjustments in its lineup and played well down the stretch.

"I kind of joked with the players, because after the first week of the season no one would have expected us to win the MAC again," Warriors coach Jody Gravelin said.

Gravelin said two lineup changes helped turn the Warriors’ season around. She moved Ashley Mahlmeister from forward to sweeper and moved Theresa Mirabito from the back to forward.

"Ashley’s one of the fastest players on the field and she has a strong leg. She can clear the ball halfway up the field," Gravelin said. "We put Mirabito up front and that made the difference.

"Once we got the people where they were supposed to be, we played much better," she continued.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Sidney is seeded second for the Section Four Class C tournament. The Warriors will play either 10th-seeded Oxford or seventh-seeded Spencer-Van Etten in a quarterfinal a week from Saturday.

Megan Persons scored on an assist from Sakura Gysin in the second half for Unadilla Valley, which is seeded eighth for sectionals and
