Redskins rally past Milford

Staff Report

Cooperstown recovered from an own goal 1 minute, 35 seconds into play, scoring three times in the second half of its 3-1 non-league boys soccer victory Wednesday over visiting Milford.

The second of Luke Banner’s two goals came 10 minutes into the second half and gave the Redskins a 2-1 lead. Banner received a through ball from Mitch Adsit and scored on an 18-yard shot into the upper corner of the goal.

Banner has 26 goals this season.

Chris Gentile scored midway through the second half to make it 3-1.

The Redskins (13-3) allowed an own goal that coach Frank Miosek referred to as "really sad." Miosek wouldn’t go into details, but said there wasn’t Milford player within 30 yards of Cooperstown’s goal when the miscue occurred.

Miosek credited the play of center halfback Jason Conklin and defensive halfback Bobby Bauer for the Redskins’ success.

"Jason Conklin wins an unbelievable amount of balls in the midfield and starts our plays with initial passes," Miosek said. "It’s a forgotten connection with Conklin and Bauer."

In the first half, Miosek said Milford (6-9-2) controlled play, singling out the play of Mike Krol and Drew Jones .

"Those two were thorns in our sides," he said, adding that a handful of Milford goalie Sean Huffstickler’s 20 saves were "outstanding."[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Cooperstown plays at Ilion (16-1) in a non-league game at 7 p.m. Friday and then plays host to Canastota at 11 a.m. Saturday. If Cooperstown beats Canastota on Saturday, it would wrap up the Center State Conference Division II title.

Milford is seeded 11th for the Section Four Class D tournament. It will play at sixth-seeded Stamford in a first-round game Tuesday.

goal. Edwards scored three of Sidney’s goals.

Sidney (9-6-3, 7-6-3) was also playing without Mike Guerriere, who broke his right leg Saturday in a 3-2 loss to Bainbridge-Guilford. Guerriere had 24 goals and 10 assists before the injury.

"It was a nice ballgame, but we were playing without Mike for the first time," Sidney coach Steve Hornung said. "We had some disorganization with people in different spots, so it took us a little while."

Sidney took a 2-0 lead on Hawley’s first goal, but Blake Shaw and Trent Wood helped Walton tie it before halftime. Wood gave Walton a 3-2 lead with 32 minutes remaining. Three minutes later, Edwards tied it up.

Sidney, seeded No. 8 in the Section Four Class C Tournament, plays host to No. 9 Groton at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Walton, seeded No. 10, visits No. 7 Oxford.
