’Wick falls to No. 8 Terps

The Hartwick College men’s soccer team fell, 1-0, at eighth-ranked Maryland in a non-conference game Thursday night.

Maurice Edu broke a scoreless deadlock at the 59 minute, 46 second mark off a feed from Graham Zusi. Edu beat Hartwick sophomore goalie Joe Gibson, who made four saves in the loss.

Maryland improved to 11-3-1 overall.

Senior Tyler Hemming, the 2005 Atlantic Soccer Conference Player of the Year, had two of Hartwick’s six shots.

The Hawks (7-8-2) visit Cornell at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Cobleskill seeded second

SUNY Cobleskill earned the No. 2 seed for the NJCAA Division III Region III men’s soccer tournament and received a first-round bye.

Ranked sixth in the latest NJCAA D-III poll, the Fighting Tigers (14-1 overall, 5-1 Mountain Valley Conference) will host a regional quarterfinal Tuesday against the winner of Saturday’s first-round game between No. 10 Mohawk Valley Community College and No. 7 Fulton-Montgomery CC.

Herkimer (16-1-1) is the top seed in the 12-team regional tournament.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Women’s Soccer

Delhi seeded fourth

SUNY Delhi earned the fourth seed for the 12-team NJCAA Division III Region III Tournament, the college announced Thursday.

The Broncos earned a first-round bye and will host a regional quarterfinal Tuesday against the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 12 Jefferson and No. 5 Alfred.

Herkimer, which features Oneonta High graduate Eileen Coyle, is the top seed for the tournament.

Cobleskill 7, F-M 0

Sabrena Gould scored twice for host Cobleskill, which closed the season with its first Mountain Valley Conference victory this fall.

Laura Martin, Amy Bower (Jefferson), Kassie Tiller (South Kortright), Danielle Lum and Emily Monbouquette also scored for the Fighting Tigers (3-11, 1-5). Monbouquette is the great niece of former major league pitcher Bill Monbouquette, who served as the Oneonta Tigers pitching coach from 2000-2005.

Goalies Kara McMillen (two saves) and Erin Pelkey (one save) combined on the shutout.

Volleyball

Cobleskill 3, T-CCC 0

Amanda Carfora finished with 15 kills, three digs and blocks to lead host Cobleskill to a 30-19, 30-12, 30-14 win over Tompkins-Cortland CC (9-12-1).

Cassie Putnam contributed six kills, 14 digs and three aces for the Fighting Tigers, who received nine kills and four blocks from Keiko Wantanabe. Krista Cohn (28 assists, eight digs), Michelle Radley (six kills, 13 digs) and Catherine Fraietta (24 digs) also contributed to the sweep for Cobleskill, which closed its regular season at 18-5.

The Fighting Tigers, ranked second in the region, await their seed for the upcoming NJCAA Division III Region III Tournament. Selections will be announced Monday.

MVCC 3, Delhi 1

Hikaru Kozuma had 36 digs and 15 kills Wednesday, but SUNY Delhi (8-15, 0-5) dropped a Mountain Valley Conference match, 32-34, 30-12, 30-24, 30-23.

Ayako Maeno (26 digs, 11 kills), Krissy Gauthier (39 assists, 17 digs), Delhi graduate Carissa Birdsall (18 digs, eight kills) and Walton graduate Robyn Murphy (18 digs, 3 aces) contributed in the loss.

Delhi closes its regular season at Herkimer at 2 p.m. Saturday.
