Hartwick football nipped by Mount Ida

Hartwick College missed two late chances at a football victory Saturday in a 21-20 loss at Mount Ida College.

Corey Sullivan hit Kyle Watkins for a 9-yard touchdown pass with 29 seconds left, giving Mount Ida the lead. Hartwick took over at its 44-yard line after a squib kick.

Quarterback Jason Boltus then hit Jack Phelan with a 31-yard pass and followed with a 22-yard pass to Rich Sands, bringing the ball to the Mount Ida 6-yard line. Boltus threw an incomplete pass, and Hartwick missed a 20-yard field goal attempt wide left as time expired.

Hartwick (2-5) took a 14-0 lead on a 22-yard TD catch by Lindy Crea and a 1-yard TD run by Boltus in the second quarter. Antwan Harris cut the deficit to 7-0 on a 5-yard run with three seconds to play before halftime.

Watkins caught a 48-yard TD pass 45 seconds into the second half to tie the score.

Hartwick regained the lead on a 40-yard Boltus-to-Sands pass with 1:36 left in the third quarter, but the Hawks missed the extra point.

Hartwick finished with 220 more yards than Mount Ida (454-234). Boltus finished 15-for-27 for 329 yards, and amassed 114 yards on 26 carries. Corey D’Agostino led Hartwick’s receivers with 5 catches for 110 yards.

Hartwick hosts Norwich on at noon this Saturday.

Hartwick 3, O-State 2

Molly Joyce scored the winner in overtime as host Hartwick defeated Oneonta State in a non-conference game.

Joyce earned her fourth goal this season off a feed from Jen Ryan with 6:50 left in the extra period. Hartwick and Oneonta (8-8) went to overtime for the third straight season, with the Hawks winning all three times.

Rachel Dansky and Kathryn Kubaryk scored first-half goals for the Red Dragons, who allowed a goal by Annie Yager with 14 seconds to play before intermission.

Jenny Knight tied it at 2 at the 59:47 mark for Hartwick (5-9), which visits Utica College on Wednesday.

Men’s Soccer

O-State 4, SUNYIT 0

Sean Hoffer had a goal and an assist to lead host Oneonta State (13-2-1) to a victory in its first meeting with SUNYIT. The two teams will be SUNY Athletic Conference opponents when Oneonta completes its reclassification from Division I to D-III in two years.

Mike Mahoney and Scott DePersis also scored for the Red Dragons, who benefited from an own goal and are unbeaten in their last 10 games. Oneonta also set a program record for victories, passing its 12-win season in 1988. The Red Dragons lost seven games that season.

Oneonta outshot SUNYIT (4-11), 22-3, and held a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Hoffer broke a scoreless tie in the 19th minute, en route to a 1-0 halftime lead. Oneonta scored three times in an eight-minute span during the second half, the first an own goal in the 60th minute on a Manscuk cross that went in off a sliding defender.

Jonathan Korn made one save in the shutout to remain unbeaten this season, at 8-0-1.

Oneonta visits Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday.

Women’s Soccer

RIT 1, Hartwick 0

Emily Traversi converted a pass from Anna Kolnik in the 19th minute as RIT earned an Empire 8 Conference victory over Hartwick at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

The Tigers (6-6-3) held a 14-6 shot advantage over the Hawks (4-12-1).

Ashley Taylor made six saves for Hartwick, which visits Elmira on Wednesday.

Volleyball

SUNYAC Round Robin

Oneonta State went 3-2 in the two-day SUNYAC Round Robin Tournament at New Paltz and qualified for the conference tournament. Red Dragons coach Colleen Cashman said teams had to have a winning record this past weekend to earn entrance into the conference tournament.

On Friday, O-State defeated Plattsburgh and Cortland in four games. Cashman said O-State’s win over Cortland was its first since the 2002 SUNYAC title match.

In the Red Dragons’ 31-29, 20-30, 30-25, 30-23 victory over Plattsburgh, Sarah Zimmermann had 19 kills and Morgan Brooks had 10 kills. O-State freshman Kristen Bennett, subbing for Erica Krohn who was injured during warmups, had 12 kills and two blocks.

Against Cortland, a 30-24, 30-21, 28-30, 30-24 victory, Cait Welch had 16 kills and 24 digs, and Zimmermann had 14 kills and five blocks. Jess Ptasnick and Maegen Eddinger had 28 assists and 39 digs, respectively.

On Saturday, O-State dropped matches against New Paltz and Potsdam before beating SUNYIT.

New Paltz won, 30-19, 30-19, 30-24. The Red Dragons received seven kills from Courtney Wavercak and six from Zimmermann.

In a 30-23, 30-19, 30-20 loss to Potsdam, Zimmermann and Welch and eight and seven kills, respectively.

The Red Dragons closed the tournament with a 30-19, 30-19, 30-18 victory over SUNYIT. Wavercak had 13 kills, Bennett had nine kills, and Christine LaGuardia contributed six kills and 11 digs. Ptasnick had 19 assists and four aces for )-State (20-14), which plays in the New York State Championships at Skidmore College this weekend. Cashman said the seedings for the tournament will be announced today.

Empire 8 Crossovers

Abby Cummings had a match-high eight kills to lead Hartwick past Alfred, 30-20, 30-18, 30-22, in its third match of the Empire 8 Crossovers on Sunday at Elmira College. Cummings also had 15 digs and a match-high seven service aces for the Hawks (14-19).

The Hawks lost their finale, 30-24, 30-24, 30-20, to RIT. Kerry Sisson and Kate Simmons had six kills apiece for Hartwick, which got 20 digs from Mary Janczak and 15 from Cummings.

On Saturday, Darcy Dolge had nine kills and nine digs in a 25-30, 24-30, 26-30 loss to Nazareth. Erica Henderson had 18 assists and Sisson contributed 19 digs.

Herkimer 3, Delhi 2

Delaware Academy graduates Carissa Birdsall and Amanda Schmitz led SUNY Delhi in a 30-25, 23-30, 30-17, 29-31, 15-11 loss at Herkimer on Saturday.

Birdsall finished with 19 digs, six kills and three aces in the Broncos’ season finale, as Delhi finished 8-16 this fall. Schmitz contributed 15 digs, 14 kils, five aces and a block.

Swimming

Hartwick splits

Hartwick won its first men’s swimming meet of the season, defeating visiting New Paltz, 131-72. The Hawks’ women fell, 107-93, in their opener.

Kurt Cedo and Kevin Milkovich won two event apiece to pace Hartwick’s men, who had nine first-place finishes. Cedo led a Hartwick sweep in the 100-yard butterfly as Kenny Roy and Chris Pinto placed second and third, respectively. Cedo also won the 100 backstroke. Milkovich won the 1,000 and 500 freestyles.

Craig Leaness won the 100 and 200 freestyles for the Hawks, who also received first-place finishes from Steve VanDuzer (50 free), Gregg Ducey (100 breaststroke) and the 200 medley relay team.

Hartwick’s women won five events, including two from freshman Erin Gray (1,000 free, 500 free). Jillian Paige won the 100 butterfly and Casey Whittaker finished first in the 100 breaststroke for Hartwick, which also got a victory in the 200 free relay.

The Hawks host the Hartwick Relays this Saturday.

Cross Country

SUNYAC Championships

Senior Kaitlin O’Sullivan earned a third-place finish at the SUNYAC Championships, which took place Saturday at Beaver Island State Park.

O’Sullivan completed the 6,000-meter women’s course in 23:37 and received First Team All-SUNYAC honors for O-State, which placed sixth out of 10 teams with 171 points. O’Sullivan also became the first O-State woman to earn SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame honors, which are awarded for placing in the top five once, the top 10 twice, or the top 15 three times at the championship meet.

Senior Nick Scalfone paced Oneonta’s men with a 26th-place finish over an 8,000-meter course in 24:56. The Red Dragons placed seventh out of 11 teams with 165 points.

RPI Invitational

Hartwick senior Autumn Swan finished fourth out of 202 runners at the RPI Invitational on Saturday.

Swan covered the 5-kilometer women’s course in 17:59, eight seconds behind Ithaca’s Rachel Blasiak, who won this season’s Empire 8 championship.

Brittney Fields finished second among Hartwick runners (100th, 20:49). The Hawks, who finished 16th as a team, were missing two of their top-five runners.

Hartwick’s men finished 14th out of 20 teams. Luke Sattler placed 102nd (28:32) out of 203 runners on the 8-kilometer men’s course.
