Broncos roll into regional

Staff Report

Fourth-seeded SUNY Delhi takes a seven-game winning streak into today’s NJCAA Division III Region III women’s soccer quarterfinal against visiting Jefferson Community College, which is seeded 12th.

The teams play at 3 p.m. at Delhi.

"I’m very confident," said Broncos coach Bob Leary, who was named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year on Monday. "We could avenge all three of our losses (in the tournament).

Delhi (10-3-1) has six players with local ties on its roster. Courtney Hoyt (Downsville), Amanda Moffett (Walton), Lisa Ruff (Delhi), Genevieve Pedulla (Davenport), Amanda Reeder (Walton) and Michelle York (Roxbury) have helped the Broncos to the most victories in the program’s history.

Hoyt, The Daily Star’s co-Player of the Year last season after helping Downsville to the Class D state championship, is second on the Broncos in scoring with 10 goals and five assists.

The Broncos placed five players on the Mountain Valley Conference all-star team in leading scorer Christine Intartaglia (17 goals, 12 assists), striker Jen Macari (two goals, five assists), defenders Pedulla and Stephanie Roberts, and goalie Moffett, who ranks 22nd nationally with a 1.8 goals-against average.

Oneonta High graduate Eileen Coyle was named the conference’s Player of the Year. She plays for top-seeded Herkimer Community College, which was last team to beat the Broncos, 6-5. Delhi, ranked eighth nationally, lost, 3-2 in overtime, to Jefferson (9-6) earlier this season.
