Staff Report
Edmeston might be involved in another surprise run to the Section Four Class D boys soccer championship. This season, though, the Panthers will be spectators.
A year after winning the sectional title as the No. 8 seed, host Edmeston fell, 2-1 in overtime, to Downsville during Tuesday’s opening round of the Section Four Class D Tournament.
Dustin Keesler scored his second goal of the game with 28 seconds left in the second sudden-death overtime, giving the 10th-seeded Eagles the upset victory over No. 7 Edmeston.
"I have to give Edmeston credit," said Downsville coach Scott Reed, whose team has won 7 of 8 to improve to 11-7. "They are a good team. It was wet and slippery. It was a matter of who was going to capitalize on the other guys’ mistakes in the slippery conditions."
Jeremy Jenkusky assisted the winning goal. He played a ball along the end line and crossed it to the middle, where Keesler scored from about 6 yards.
"We had a number of opportunities but didn’t finish," said Edmeston’s coach Ed Wheeldon, whose team finished 11-5. "I thought we were the better team tonight, but the scoreboard doesn’t show it."
The Panthers beat Davenport in last year’s Section Four final, 3-2, in overtime. Davenport, which was seeded third last fall, is the top seed for the 2006 tournament. The Wildcats (17-1) were one of four Class D teams to receive first-round byes Tuesday. The others were No. 4 South Kortright (14-2-2), No. 3 Laurens (13-0-1) and Downsville’s quarterfinal opponent, No. 2 Odessa-Montour (11-4-1).

Downsville plays O-M at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Union-Endicott.
"They are definitely pumped now," Reed said of his team. "They were awful quiet going into the game and were nervous. Hopefully, today calmed the nerves of the younger ones."
Keesler scored his first goal with about three minutes left in the first half. Colin Bliss, a Daily Star First-Team All-Star last year, tied the score about two minutes later.
Michael Lawrence made 19 saves in goal for Downsville, which was outshot, 25-8. The Eagles also played without starting freshman midfielder Dalton Polomcean, who broke his right arm in practice last Friday, Reed said.
"I just think we’ve jelled together as a team," said Reed, whose team started the season 0-4. "We’ve changed formations and moved people around. They’ve adjusted, and the younger guys have stepped up."
Nick Benjamin made five saves for the Panthers.
