Delhi women win regional

Staff Report

Chelsea Griep scored twice in the second half Tuesday as host SUNY Delhi beat Jefferson, 2-0, to open the NJCAA Division III Region III women’s soccer tournament.

Christina Intartaglia assisted both goals for the fourth-seeded Broncos, who had a 26-10 advantage in shots.

"We pretty much controlled the play, but they had some good opportunities," Delhi coach Bob Leary said. "They were really good on the counter-attack. We had a hard time getting one past (Jefferson goalie Alicia Thomas)."

Thomas finished with 20 saves. Walton graduate Amanda Moffett had nine saves to earn the shutout for Delhi (11-3-1), which is ranked eighth among NJCAA D-III programs.

Griep snapped a scoreless tie with 28 minutes, 9 seconds remaining. Intartaglia sent a through ball down the right side to Griep, who dribbled in and scored on the near side. Griep finished the scoring with 4:06 left.

The Broncos play at top-seeded Herkimer, which features Oneonta High graduate Eileen Coyle, in a semifinal Saturday. Coyle is the Mountain Valley Conference’s Player of the Year.
