Spooktacular to close season at Afton
The New Afton Speedway will close its 2006 auto racing season with its annual Spooktacular, which runs Friday and Saturday.
The main event is a 50-lap pure stock feature scheduled for the afternoon of Oct. 28. The winner will earn $1,000, and $100 will go to the driver who takes the green.
Sportsman modifieds, pro stocks, four-cylinder pups, and the Mid-State Antique Stock Car Club also will be featured Saturday. Gates open at 11 a.m. Racing begins at 1 p.m. Admission is $15.
The track will hold a demolition derby at 7 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 5 p.m. for the event, which pays $500 to the winner. The second annual Skip Pabis Memorial for the IMCA modifieds, which also runs Oct. 27, will pay $500 to win plus lap money. The CRSA sprint group also will be featured Friday. Admission is $7.

Swim meet set for Sunday
The 34th annual Leatherstocking Swim Meet begins with warm-ups at 9 a.m. Sunday at Hartwick College’s Moyer Pool.
The meet starts at 10 a.m. and is open to all U.S. and Canadian Masters Swimmers ages 18 and older, as of Oct. 29, 2006.

Basketball tourney to run Nov. 5
Unatego Spartan Hoops will host a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Nov. 5 at Unatego Central.
The tournament is open to boys and girls, who will compete in modified, junior varsity and varsity divisions. Registration runs from noon-1 p.m. Nov. 5. Games begin at 1 p.m.
Registration forms are available in advance by calling Jim Knight at 607-563-9673. Cost is $40 per team, with a maximum of four players per squad.
U-R to honor winners Nov. 11
Utica-Rome Speedway will honor its 2006 track champions during its annual awards banquet at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Turning Stone Casino and Resort. The event is expected to end around 1 a.m.
Willy Decker (358-modified), Mike Button (sportsman), Jerry Holmes (pro stock), Russ Marsden (pure stocks) and Jim Roberts (IMCA modified) won their respective divisions this past season.
Tire refunds also will be distributed, but drivers must present to receive money.

Sidney athletes nominated for honor
Sidney athletes Chris Weitzman and Maria Mirabito have been nominated for the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, the school announced last week.
The program celebrates the achievements of the nation’s top high school seniors in and out of the classroom.
Sidney assistant principal and athletic director Timothy McNamara nominated Weitzman and Mirabito for the award based on the following accomplishments:
Varsity soccer and tennis player Weitzman holds a 96.00 grade-point average, which ranks first in his class. A peer tutor, he is involved in several extra-curricular activities, including Rotary Club and Youth Court.
Weitzman is also a member of the Honor Society and a scholar-athlete at Sidney.
Varsity basketball and soccer player Mirabito is third in her class with a 95.02 GPA. She is a volunteer for the Rotary Club, Rainbow Day Care, Habitat for Humanity and the Sidney Memorial Public Library. Mirabito also participates on the school’s student council.
Area women complete marathon
Oneonta residents Nancy Mitchell and Michele Pearsall were among 2,000 runners who competed in the 11th annual Steamtown Marathon, which ran Oct. 8 in Scranton, Pa.
Mitchell and Pearsall ran side-by-side over the 26.2-mile course and finished in 4 hours, 25 minutes, 15 seconds. Mitchell placed ninth and Pearsall 53rd in their respective age-groups. Mitchell competed in her 16th marathon and Pearsall in her sixth. The two Oneonta High graduates have been running together for nine years.
Susquehanna Bass Association results
Steve Llewellyn and Frank Microni won the Susquehanna Bass Association’s Frank’s Fun Tournament, which ran Oct. 15 on Canadarago Lake.
Llewellyn and Microni caught three fish weighing 10.02 pounds. Mike Barse and Vic VanSteenburg placed second (three fish, 9.16 pounds); Ralph and Fred Sobers were third (two, 5.37); Jim Dillenbeck, Matt Maison and Lou Falvo finished fourth (5.33); and Mike Wood, Bill Mann and Fred Hitt placed fifth (5.16).
Ralph and Fred Sobers won the dash fish with a largemouth weighing 3.41 pounds. Llewellyn caught the big smallmouth (3.42); Wood, Mann and Hitt the big pickerel (1.58); and Kevin Ebkriy and Jeff Gallusser the big walleye (2.57).
