OHS avoids first-round upset

Staff Report

Fifth-seeded Oneonta didn’t take the lead for keeps until Ashley Frederick’s goal with 8 minutes, 44 seconds left as the Yellowjackets defeated No. 12 Watkins Glen, 2-1, in a Section Four Class B first-round soccer game Wednesday at Chenango Forks.

The Yellowjackets (10-7) outshot the Senecas, 20-1.

"We had a lot of quality shots, but we had some shots where we made it easy on their keeper," OHS coach Jerry Mackey said. "We’re happy to get out of there with a win."

Frederick’s goal came on an assist from Lauren Payne, who scored the Yellowjackets’ first goal.

Payne chipped the ball into the box from the right side, where Frederick settled it and then one-timed into the goal.

Oneonta took a 1-0 lead on Payne’s goal with 14:57 left in the first half. Nora Walker set up the goal.

Watkins Glen (4-13) tied the score with 12:48 left in the half on its lone shot. Summer Petit finished the play after a long pass into the box.

Next up for the Yellowjackets is a 6 p.m. game Saturday at fourth-seeded Dyrden (13-3), renewing a rivalry from earlier this decade.

Oneonta won the 2002 Section Four Class B title game, 2-1, over Dryden. The following year, OHS advanced to states after beating the Lions, 3-1, in a penalty-kick shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 tie. Current Oneonta State forward Kirsten Clapper played on both of those Dryden teams.[an error occurred while processing this directive]

"The Interscholastic Athletic Conference is way up this year," Mackey said. "We’re going to have our hands full. They certainly have the ability to score a lot of goals, but preventing goals has been our strength this year."

Class D

Laurens 2, O-M 1, OT

Courtney Goidden and Rebekah Wycoff, who came into the Section Four Class D first-round game with a combined five goals, scored for 12th-seeded Laurens in its victory over No. 5 O-M at Ann G. McGuinness Field in Endicott.

Wycoff’s rebound goal with 4:25 left in the second overtime was the difference. Senior Emily Bilz took a shot from the left wing outside the 18 that O-M goalie Chelsea Hopper partially deflected. Wycoff was waiting on the far post and kicked it in for her fourth goal of the season.

"The girls have a lot of drive to prove themselves as a No. 12 seed," Laurens coach Amy DuCharme said. "I was very pleased with

how they stepped up and showed they wanted to win this game."

The Indians (7-9-1) tied the score at 1 with 5:28 left in regulation on a goal by Rebecca Ayers.

Goidden scored her third goal of the season with 17:12 left in the first half. Bilz played a through ball to Goidden, who touched it forward before scoring to the far post.

"We got scoring from players who are not my leading scorers by any means," DuCharme said.

Laurens (8-6-3) plays at fourth-seeded Edmeston at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal. The Panthers defeated Laurens by scores of 2-0 and 2-1 during the season. The latter game went to overtime.

Schenevus 3, Jefferson 2

Both of Cassandra Brown’s came in the second half, the latter with 3:24 left that snapped a 2-all tie as 10th-seeded Schenevus won at No. 7 Jefferson in a Class D first-round game played in snowy, rainy conditions.

Brown, who came into the game with two goals on the season, scored the winner off a rebound. Jefferson goalie Anna Bulka made the initial save, but the ball squirted to the left side, where Brown scored with her left foot.

Schenevus coach Stephanie Banks said she moved Brown from midfield to forward, because of a left ankle injury. She did the same with Nicole Dulkis, who returned from a 2 1/2 absence with a right ankle injury. Dulkis scored the Dragons’ first goal.

"They’re typically midfielders, but I moved them up to preserve their ankles," Banks said.

Brown’s tying goal came with 14:41 left. She received a flick pass from Brianna Bookhout on a breakaway and scored into an open net.

Jefferson (10-5-1), which had a 30-15 advantage in shots, received goals from Miranda Blakeslee and Tara Manley early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead. Manley’s goal came on a 18-yard shot into the upper-right corner of the goal with 26 minutes left.

Banks said defender Jayme Bentley marked Manley most of the game and performed well. Alicia Sagendorf made 16 saves for the Dragons (9-5-3), who play at second-seeded Downsville (16-1-2) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Downsville, which defeated Morris, 5-1, Wednesday, is the defending Class D state champions.

Margaretville 3, SK 0

Carly Galatioto had two goals and an assist to help 11th-seeded Margaretville upset host South Kortright in the opening round of the Section Four Class D girls soccer tournament.

"We just came out and played a good 80 minutes of soccer," first-year Margaretville coach Toni Smith said. "They were aggressive and confident and they stepped up. They played very well."

Casey Hubbell scored Margaretville’s first goal with 18 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the opening half. Galiatioto made it 2-0 with about four minutes gone in the second half. She finished the scoring about 10 minutes later.

Victoria Drizis made six saves to earn the shutout for the Blue Devils, who play the winner of Milford and Worcester on Saturday in a quarterfinal.

Downsville 5, Morris 1

Macy Davis had two goals and an assist to help host Downsville rally from an early deficit in a Section Four Class D first-round game.

The 15th-seeded Mustangs (8-9-1) opened the scoring 15 minutes into play when Bobbi-Jean Bryden slipped through two defenders and scored on a breakaway.

Davis tied the score with about seven minutes left in the half.

"We started slow and we were flat for like the first 23 minutes," said Downsville coach Burt Reed, whose team improved to 16-1-2. "I didn’t see the urgency that I thought was necessary. They turned it on when (Morris) scored and possessed it for the rest of the half."

Second-seeded Downsville is the defending Section Four and state Class D champion.

"In the second half, our possession play took over," Reed said. "We finished when we had the opportunities. We scored on two set pieces, which was nice."

Kate Hume contributed two goals and Allison Townsend had a goal and two assists for the Eagles, who play host to Schenevus on Saturday.

Reed also singled out senior stopper Natasha Jeanniton. She played the majority of the game in place of junior starter Kayla Stone, who sat out the game because of a concussion she suffered against Davenport in the Delaware League championship Saturday.

"It was a tough hole to fill, but Natasha did a great job," Reed said.

H-T 2, CV-S 1

Paige Plattner scored from the top of the penalty box with 13:42 remaining to give ninth-seeded Hunter-Tannersville an opening-round victory at No. 8 seed Cherry Valley-Springfield.

Plattner was at the top right-hand side of the box and sent a high shot to the opposite post for the winner.

"We had a very good first half," said H-T coach Julia France, whose team improved to 9-6. "The wind was at our back and we dominated most of the half. We came back out flat and they got a lot of runs and tied it up with about 20 minutes to go."

Devin Friedman’s first-half goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Jenny Bowen tied it for the eighth-seeded Patriots (9-7-1).

"It was a pretty evenly-matched game," France said. "They had some good runs. Our second half we wavered a little and it almost hurt us."

H-T visits top-seeded Davenport (15-1-2) on Saturday.

The Panthers had a corner kick that was served into the middle of the penalty box. The ball deflected off a Gilboa player and out to Slentz, who was about 22 yards out. Her shot went low and to the left corner.

"Weather conditions as they are, it was a tough day," said Edmeston coach Melanie Mumbulo, whose team improved to 13-4-1. "It went from sunny, to sleeting, to raining, to doing nothing. You just hope you can get a goal in and hang on."

Suellyn Tophoven had six saves and Susanna Johnson two for the Panthers, who play host to Laurens on Saturday.

Caitlyn McGuire made six saves for 13th-seeded Gilboa (9-9), which had an 11-8 advantage in shots.

Worcester-Milford postponed

Delhi 1, UV 0

Faith Burns scored off a cross from Liz Viafore midway through the first half as ninth-seeded Delhi earned a first-round victory at Unadilla Valley.

Viafore was on the right side and crossed into the middle of the penalty box. Burns was there and used her body to push the ball in from about 5 yards.

"It was a good game, back-and-forth," first-year Delhi coach Frank Vito said. "We both had lots of scoring opportunities, but we got the one and it was all we needed."

Ashley Skovira made 12 saves for the Bulldogs (7-10), who had a 15-14 advantage in shots.
