Walton field hockey moves on in Class C

Staff Report

Holley Reynolds and Sybil Stanton scored for host Walton in a 2-0 Section Four Class C field hockey quarterfinal victory over visiting Harpursville on Thursday.

Stanton assisted Reynolds on the opening goal 4 1/2 minutes into play, then converted a pass from Katie Eisele with 20 minutes left for the final margin.

Freshman goalie Brooke Spencer earned her third shutout this season with seven saves for the fourth-seeded Warriors (12-4-1).

"Brooke played a really good game _ one of her best games all year," said Walton coach Brynne Hoover, whose team kept an opponent scoreless for the fourth time this fall. "She was very aggressive and came out a couple of times. She stopped two fastbreaks at key times."

Walton advanced to play at top-seeded Marathon (17-1) in the semifinals. The Olympians routed Delhi, 5-0, in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Fifth-seeded Harpursville finished the season 9-7-2.

"It was a little bit different," said Cooperstown coach Brenda Wedderspoon-Gray, whose team tied, M-E, 1-1, during the regular season on grass. "The (faster) turf took away our passing game."
