Delhi boys reach semis
Staff Report
Troy Tucker and Avery Meehan each finished with a goal and an assist to help fifth-seeded Delhi reach the Section Four semifinals for the first time in school history with a 3-0 Class C boys soccer victory over host Unadilla Valley on Friday.
The Bulldogs earned a meeting with top-seeded Marathon (15-1-1) at 2 p.m. Tuesday at a site to be determined. The Olympians beat No. 9 Groton, 1-0, in another quarterfinal Friday.
"We know we have a tough battle coming up, and we just have to put it all together and have a better game than we did today," said Delhi coach Brian Rolfe, whose team improved to 12-4-2. "We know it’s an uphill climb, but we’re going to try and do it."
The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at halftime. Goalie Cameron Wentz made five saves to earn the shutout.
"Having a week and a couple days off didn’t help," said Unadilla Valley coach Matt Osborne, whose fourth-seeded team finished 11-4-1. "We were certainly pretty rusty with our passing. We didn’t put it together today, and we never really pressured them at all.
"We just seemed to be a step slower today," he continued. "They beat us to the loose balls, and we played a lot of defense today."
Kyle Cappiello also scored for the Bulldogs, who had a 7-5 advantage in shots.
"We played pretty well and our passing was pretty crisp," Rolfe said. "I think it was mostly us completing our passes and moving off the ball into space. UV played decent and they are a tough team, but we just kind of played one of our better games today."
